Jabez Whittaker, an early settler in Virginia, is known to have been
married to Mary Bourchier, the daughter of John Bourchier, Knt., of
Lambeth, Surrey, by his wife, Elizabeth. Mary Bourchier, wife of
Jabez Whittaker, was granted administration of her father's estate in
England in 1626; the deceased widow, Elizabeth, having renounced
administration. Administration on the estate was subsequently re-
granted in 1635 to Mary's brother, Verney Bourchier.
That Elizabeth, wife of John Bourchier, was the sister of Richard
Verney is suggested by a letter dated 1601, published in Cal. of the
MSS. of the Most Honourable the Marquess of Salisbury (Hist. MSS.
Comm.) Pt. 11 (1906): 233. This item may be viewed at the following
weblink:
http://books.google.com/books?id=JGJnAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA233&dq=Verney+Bourchier&lr=#PPA233,M1
The letter in question was written by Richard Verney to Sir Robert
Cecil. Richard Verney was writing on behalf of John Bourchier, who
was concerned regarding the estate of his brother, William Bourchier,
a lunatic. In the letter, Richard Verney identifies John Bourchier
as his brother-in-law.
Inasmuch as John Bourchier, Knt., of Lambeth, Surrey is known to have
had one older brother named William Bourchier, Esq.,and inasmuch as
John Bourchier, Knt. named a son, Verney Bourchier, it seems clear
that the John Bourchier named in the 1601 letter as Richard Verney's
brother-in-law is John Bourchier, Knt., of Lambeth, Surrey. Although
there are other possibilities, it seems a good bet that John
Bourchier's wife, Elizabeth, was the sister of Richard Verney.

It is stated that this couple, George and Jane had "one son and four
daughters". The son being Richard Verney "the elder"; Knt born in
1563 who married Margaret Greville, Baroness Willoughby de Broke de
jure (she was heiress of her brother Fulk).
I do not know who the "four daughters" were, but chronologically
Elizabeth could be one of those.

There is a daughter Elizabeth given in the Ancestral File as bap on 25
Mar 1593 at Hanging Grimston, Yorkshire. One of this name, married by
extracted batch M105023 to Richard Rossiter on 15 May 1609 at Kirby
Underdale, Yorkshire. And then your source above gives a settlement
in 1610.
About the dead man's father, also Richard and still living, he is
living there at Sleaford and I *think* this is because one of this
name married Bridget Carr third daughter of Robert Carr of Sleaford,
Lincs, esq by his wife Elizabeth Cawdron.
Tony Hoskins posted on this man back in Feb, that is on Robert Carr,
perhaps he has some source which can tell us *when* Bridget married
Richard Rossiter.

The next weblink confirms the statement made in the previous source
that Jabez Whitaker was a member of the council of the Colony of
Virginia in 1626.

Jabez Whitaker's immediate family is discussed in the book, Family
Bible Records, Wayne County, Tennessee, pg. 100, which information is
found at the following weblink:
As for the identity of Mary Bourchier's mother, I note that the online
Tudor Place database identifies her as Elizabeth Verney, daughter of
George Verney, of Compton Verney, Warwickshire, by his wife, Jane
Lucy. However, no sources are provided to support this
identification.

The extended ancestry of George Verney and Jane Lucy is found in
several databases in the Ancestry World Tree Project. Below are
weblinks to two of them. If the Verney parentage of Elizabeth, wife
of Sir John Bourchier, can be established as alleged, then Elizabeth
would have several interesting royal descents.

Below are two records which pertain to Sir John Bourchier, the father
of Mary (Bourchier) Whitaker. The first record identifies his
residence in 1615 as "Crimston" [i.e., Hanging Grimston], Yorkshire.
In the second record dated 1624, his residence is recorded as Lambeth
Marshe, Surrey.

The post below by Paul Kirby dated 2003 confirms that Sir John
Bourchier, of Hanging Grimston (in Kirby Underdale), Yorkshire and
Lambeth Marsh, Surrey, had a daughter, Elizabeth, as suggested earlier
today by John Brandon, plus two other daughters, Lucy and Katherine.
The following weblink likewise confirms that Elizabeth Bourchier,
daughter of Sir John Bourchier, married Richard Rossiter:

Hanging Grimston is the site of a village abondoned several hundred
years
ago and nothing of the village remains.
It is, and always has been, part of the parish of Kirby Underdale in
ERY.
Many of my Kirby ancestors were born there.
"The History of Kirby Underdale" by the Rev. W.R. Shepherd 1928 give
some
detail on the Bourchier Family which included two Lord Chancellors one
of
whom was also Archbishop of Canterbury 1454-1486.
In 1575, Sir Ralph Bourchier of Beningbrough purchased the manor at
Hanging
Grimston and other lands in Kirby Underdale, Painsthorpe and Uncleby
(all
within the parish).
It was probably bought for his son John Bourchier, subsequently
knighted in
1609, as he took up residence there with his wife Elizabeth Hall and
the
following, according to the Rev Shepherd,. are recorded for the
family.
Baptisms
1593 - Elizabeth Bucher, the daughter of Mr. John Bucher, the 5th of
Marche
1595 - John Boucher the 7th August
1604 - Luce Bursher of Grimston was baptised the 3rd June
1605 - Mr James Bursher the sonn of Mr John Bursher was baptised the
XX of
September
1608 - Mtrs. Qattren Bursher daughter of Mr John Bursher was baptised
the
XIII of October
1610 - Mr William Boursher sonn of Sir John Boursher was baptised the
XXIIII
day of Maye.
Presumably this is the William you are seeking.
Brilliant - 6 baptisms all with different spellings of the surname and
without once getting the common spelling for the family!
There are aome other details given for the family but none for
William.

The "snippet" weblink referenced below mentions a certain Sir John
Bourchier, the Regicide, who was a first cousin of Mary (Bourchier)
Whitaker, of Virginia. It confirms that the Regicide's father,
William Bourchier, was of Benningbrough Hall, Yorkshire and that the
said William Bourchier was married to Katherine Barrington. Also
that the Regicide's father, William Bourchier, was declared insane at
his father's death in 1598.
http://books.google.com/books?id=ZSE8AAAAIAAJ&q=Bourchier+Regicide&dq=Bourchier+Regicide&pgis=1
Reviewing the statements of the above cited source, there can be no
question now that the John Bourchier mentioned in the 1601 letter of
Richard Verney is the same person as Sir John Bourchier, of Hanging
Grimston, Yorkshire and Lambeth Marsh, Surrey. In the letter of
Richard Verney, Verney indicates that William Bourchier, the brother
of John, had gone insane and that William had a brother-in-law named
Barrington.
