Dear Medieval Genealogy list,
Can anyone tell me about professions in 16th century Baden-Württemberg? One of my ancestors, Antonius Fleiner, was supposedly a Küchenmeister in 1533. I just find it so odd that a master chef was a valid profession at that time. The text (in German), Flyner - Fliner - Fleiner by Else Rath-Horing, did not state that he was employed by a duke or prince, but he later was a hospital administrator and then a mayor (Bürgermeister). He was also a vogt, which doesn't translate - does anyone know if this means bailiff or reeve?

Thank you, once again, for your expertise!
Sincerely,
Adrienne Boaz

Also, in German, the following for the "Amt" (office)

Hope it helps,

Thank you, JL - I had seen that wiki article, which is what made me think that the Google translation of Küchenmeister was correct. Leo mentioned to me that this word could be translated as "master of the kitchen", which I think makes more sense for the time period.
