Dear all,

I know this is off-topic for the time-scale of this list, but I'm not sure where else to ask, and I hope
someone here might have some information to share. Does anyone have the background to Hercules BURLEIGH,
(preferably back to the time-scale of the list:-). He shows on Google as being at the the siege of Derry
where he commanded a company of King William III. I know he had a brother Theophilus Burleigh. I've checked
Leo's site, but couldn't find anything.

Any advice much appreciated.
Kind regards, Yvonne

We see that Hercules had a daughter Dorothea who died 30 May 1794 with
issue born in 1764, so that gives a rough guide to when Hercules
lived.

You might look at the Procat to see if Hercules left a will.

Just to avoid confusion, PROCAT (Public Records Office Catalogue)
ceased to exist under that name when the PRO was merged and
rechristened as The National Archives. It is now simply "the
Catalogue":

Somebody appears to think they know who she/he is

I suppose that the parish register at Antrim might be preserved, and
maybe this is from it, but it doesn't make that clear here.

You might check it out and see if you can create the entire Burleigh
family from the register.

Recte: parish register of Lisburn

I think there might be another generation here.
Dorothea is given as bap 9 Jan 1727 dau of Hercules
A Hercules is given as bap 3 Jun 1705 son of HERCULES (as found)

Checking Burke's Landed Gentry here
http://books.google.com/books?id=ZNEKAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA178&dq=hercules+burleigh&client=firefox-a#v=onepage&q=&f=false

we see a statement that a Hercules had "an eldest son William born
1700" and it was this Hercules Sr who served at Londonderry

So I think your descent goes
Hercules d 1744
Hercules bap 1705
Dorothea bap 1727

Many thanks, Will and Taf, for your information and guidance.

I can't find a will for Hercules Burleigh on the National Archives site, but I'll keep trying other wills
indexes, in case he left one in Ireland.

Kind regards,
Yvonne

Again, for clarification purposes, the NA site has indexes for few
wills other than those recorded at the Prerogative Court of
Canterbury, and while it served as default registry for those with
holdings in multiple jurisdictions, you usually have to look more
locally for wills. Try for example the Will Calendar search for the
Northern Ireland PRO:
