I have tried to find a painted portrait of Landgraf Wilhelm IV of Hesse, but
I could not find one (I tried it via Google). Does anyone have a suggestion?

Grant, thank you for your reaction. I did find this one, but I could not use
it because it is not very detailed. If there does not exist anything else, I
think I will order it and scan it, but I realy would like a painted (color)
portrait.

I thought you might have already seen that one, Fred, but thought it
was worth a try. I may have an image of a painted portrait, though
whether in colour or not remains to be seen, in my German-published
books on the Hessen landgraves. They're packed away at the moment,
but I'll dig them out and see what I can find for you.

Grant, thanks again. If you do have the title(s) of the book(s), I can go to
a library an try to find the book(s) an make a copy of all interesting info.
BTW, the reason I am so interested in a portrait of Wilhelm IV, is that he
is my (only) link to Royalty in my ancestry.

Yes, I saw that from your site - but I also saw lots of Hessen noble
families through which there are connections to early German kings,
via various wives who married in. We share many of the same names.
So I guess I will be compiling that information, too, if you'd like to
see it along with the portrait (though I make no promises re: the
latter! :-)

It means that his branch of the family descended from a younger son.

Younger brother, or descendant of same.
