People belonging to a house, usually, referred to themselves to the title,
after all, because that was the value of their membership of a house. Most
of the time, they also had a family name/surname which, nearly always, was
different from the family title.
Also we must not forget that todays concept of a "family name/ surname" did
not apply in medieval times.
I have been discussing with Douglas Richardson the confusing issue of by
what family name the members of "The House of Arundel" went by. He believes
in, the last several generations, a total obliteration of the name FitzAlan
and that Arundel(l) is to be regarded the surname of the later members of
this family.
He made, in my opinion, a rather snide remark about amateur genealogists
copying each other. I think that is incorrect, because most amateur
genealogist are copying from sources like The Complete Peerage, Burke's
Peerage, or works by "professional genealogists" like David Faris and
Douglas Richardson. I have already indicated that Faris displayed both,
Arundel and FitzAlan, as the name of one individual, and therefor, how
dogmatic can we, amateur genealogists, be?
I think it might be interesting to see who belonged to this House of
Arundel, especially in the time span given by Douglas Richardson. I would
like to present what I have found, and ask for corrections and/or additions
to these details.

This uses the surname FitzAlan, as it does indiscriminately, and wrongly,
for all holders of the Arundel title. Also it makes Alice a Lady Alice
Plantagenet but, as we know, Plantagenet was not a surname until many years
later. Amongst their children is the wrong entry of Sir Edmund (married to
Sibil Montacute) who belongs to the next generation.
The Complete Peerage Volume I pages 241-244.
This displays Edmund, 8th Earl of Arunbdel as a FitzAlan.
Also it gives as extra information that his wardship was obtained by John,
Earl of Surrey and Sussex, whose granddaughter he married.

Paget, Volume I pages 194 and 195.
These are ancestral tables of Joan Beaufort, wife of James I, King of Scots,
and of James II, King of Scots, and therefor deals with the same (FitzAlan)
people. Mentioned are Edmund FitzAlan, 8th Earl of Arundel, Richard
FitzAlan, 9th Earl of Arundel and the latter's daughter Alice FitzAlan, who
married Thomas Holand, 2nd Earl of Kent.

This is the entry for her husband, who, as her widower, married again. This
gives that in 1325 he married Alice, daughter of Edmund (FitzAlan) Earl of
Arundel, by Alice, sister and in her issue of John de Warenne, Earl of
Surrey.
No further dates are given for Alice.
3.Jane FitzAlan
married Warrine Gerard, Lord L'Isle
Burke's Extinct Peerage, 1866, page 200. This seems to be an erroneous entry
as The Complete Peerage, Volume VIII, page 48 and onwards, makes no mention
of such a marriage.
4.Alaive FitzAlan
died circa 20 January 1385/6
married circa 1338
Roger Le Strange, 5th Lord Le Strange of Knockyn
son of Roger, 4th Lord, and Maud.........
born 1327
died 23 August 1382 "Kenewyleswode", Wales
