we see ancestors of Sir Edward Seymour, 1st Bart of Berry Pomeroy (or
Bury Pomeroy)
Edward just happens to be an ancestor to hundreds of people if not
more, including some Dukes etc.
At any rate we see his mother poor Margaret or Jane Walsh of Cathanger
hanging out there with hardly any ancestors.
Joan Walsh was the only heir of her father John Walsh or Walshe of
Cathanger who happened to be a Justice of the Common Pleas in 1563.
John died in 1572 and was buried in the Parish Church of Fivehead. He
was the only heir apparent of his father another John Walsh. John the
son was a barrister and reader by 1555. He appears in a deed with his
father in 1538

John Walsh the judge was the son apparently of Jane Broke daughter of
Sir Edward Broke and it would be helpful if someone had details on
this Edward to take us back further.
Meanwhile, John's father John was the son of Thomas Walsh, Esq also
of Cathanger who was dead by 1514

The manor of Cathanger was given by King Richard I to William de Wrotham,
chief forester of Somerset and Dorset. William had two sons William and
Richard and was succeeded in the estate by his elder son William [who was
Archdeacon of Taunton and apparently d. 9 Henry III]. The younger William
was succeeded by his nephew Richard [son of Richard] who was a knight and a
justice of the Common Pleas. He is said to have d. without issue 35 Henry
III [although some pedigrees attempt to connect the later family of Wrothe
of Enfield to him]. His heirs were his sisters or their issue, said by
Collinson to be: 1) William de Placetis or Plessy, son of his eldest sister
Constance; 2) Susanna, wife of John le Blund; 3) Margaret, wife of Geoffrey
de Scoland; 4) Christian, wife of Thomas Picot. [A visitation pedigree in
Weaver's edition of the Somerset visitations gives different names to these
sisters but lists the same husbands]
On the division of the family estates, the manor of Cathanger was included
in the portion of Margaret, wife of Geoffrey de Scoland. He died 16 Edward
I and was succeeded by Francis, who, by Juliana his wife, was father of
another Francis. The second Francis died 12 Edward III, leaving a son Henry
who died 41 Edward III, being succeeded by another Francis. This final
Francis died 3 Henry V, leaving as heir his only daughter Eleanor who
married Thomas Montague. When Thomas Montague died 28 Henry VI his two
granddaughters were his heirs: Mary wife of Thomas Aylworth, and Elizabeth
wife of Sir Edward Broke and afterward of Robert Palmer.
Robert Palmer possessed Cathanger in right of his wife Elizabeth but
released his interest in 8 Henry VII to John Brent. Soon after, in 12 Henry
VII, John Walsh possessed Cathanger, probably in right of his wife Jane,
dau. of Sir Edward Broke, by who he had a son [John] and two daughters,
Agnes wife of Nicholas Salisbury and Lucy wife of Thomas Cook. After his
wife died John Walsh took holy orders at the nearby abbey of Muchelney, but
he later was expelled after raping one Mary Clause, whom he subsequently
married as his second wife and had another son and two daughters.
John, the son of John and Jane Broke, was a sergeant at law and judge of the
King's Bench. Collinson does not mention his wife's name, but notes that
his [unnamed] daughter married "lord Edward Seymour, eldest son to the fifth
Duke of Somerset". Apparently Judge John Walsh was the last of the Walsh
family to hold Cathanger, which went to his nephew George Salisbury and was
apparently then sold.
Perhaps others can fill in the many gaps in this ancestry, including
particularly the Broke [or Brooke?] line. As noted by Will, there are many
descendants of Margaret Walsh through the Seymour connection - including,
for example, Princes William and Harry.
