NEW!! - MY MELUNGEON HERITAGE--A Story of Life on Newman's Ridge, by Mattie R.
Johnson. 1997. The author descends from several of the earliest settlers in Hancock
Co., Tenn. Here she tells of the people who lived on Newman's Ridge, in an area
called Prospect Ridge, between 1940 and the late 1950s. It was a time and place much
different from today. A small map shows the areas in Tenn., Ky., N.C., and Va. where
Melungeons are known to have resided. (Item #: ML-004 $12.95)

THE MELUNGEONS--Notes on the Origin of a Race, by Bonnie Ball, rev. ed.
1992.  The subject of this book is the mysterious mixed-race ethnic group
called Melungeons, now "disappearing the same way they appeared - by
marrying others than their own," (quote from  newspaperman Ed Rawlins).
They settled the Cumberland region of mid- to eastern Tenn., up to the
Tenn.-Va. border. Mrs. Ball has a lifelong close acquaintance with
members of this group. Includes a sizeable list of books for further
reading, which the author says is not a bibliography, although it
certainly looks like one! (Item#: ML-002 $8.95)

THE MELUNGEONS--The Resurrection of a Proud People, by N. Brent Kennedy
w/ Robyn V. Kennedy, rev. ed. 1996.  A second subtitle, "An Untold Story
of Ethnic Cleansing in America," drives home the fact that this
mixed-race ethnic group suffered severe discrimination as they eked out a
living in the Cumberland region of Tennessee. The authors discuss the
various ethnic origin theories that have swirled about this band, and
supply a list of common Melungeon surnames that show up in the Carolinas,
Va., and Kentucky. The text is illustrated with real families and
genealogical lines, as N. Brent Kennedy comes from Melungeon heritage.
(Item#: ML-001 $17.95)

MELUNGEONS YESTERDAY AND TODAY, by Jean P. Bible, 1975.  Journalist,
teacher, and amateur historian Bible addresses the question,"Who are the
Melungeons?". The author also discusses the origin of the term that
identifies this mixed-race "clan," their physical characteristics, their
way of life, and particular individuals of this ethnic group. (Item#:
ML-003 $12.00)
