Grayson County, Va was one of the first frontier areas in the early
U.S., and was key in encouraging westward expansion. Formed in 1793,
it was located near the intersection of the Great Wagon Road
(southwest from Philadelphia to Georgia) and the beginning of the
Wilderness Road (west through Cumberland Gap into Kentucky). Thousands
of early pioneers passed through the area, and many decided to settle
in Grayson County. Many descendants of the earliest settlers can
still be found there today.
