Putnam County was organized April 1, 1822. Greencastle is the County
Seat. The town was named at the suggestion of Ephraim Dukes, one of
the donors of the land on which this County Seat was established,
after Greencastle, Pennsylvania, his native town. Putnam County is
divided into 13 Civil Townships: Clinton, Cloverdale, Floyd, Franklin,
Greencastle, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Russell,
Warren and Washington.
