Shalom,
Regarding Michael Trapunsky's question if anyone heard of Kaufman as a
first name. I have copies of burial documents for some of my ancestors
from Berlin where they are referred to as "Kaufman Alfred Alexander"
etc, the word kaufman means a salesman or businessman. So it was used
as a title.

Yes, "Kaufmann" is the German for merchant & was often used as a title in
Jewish documents.  However, if you check one of the books on Jewish names,
you will find that "Kaufman" is a nickname for Jacob that became a name of
its own.  The way this works: -man is a diminutive in Yiddish, -kov the
2nd syllable in Yakov, & voila.
