Hi folks.

It seems my parents took a holiday in Ireland in 1947 and chose their
destination with the intention of looking up some distant relatives on my
mother's side - her father was of Irish extraction some generations back.

I've recently come across a few old black and white negatives from that
holiday and wondered whether any of the Irish experts on this ng could help
me identify the locations. It would help me greatly if I could home in on an
area for geanolgical searches - Ireland is a big country otherwise.

I've uploaded scans of the negatives to an orphan webpage at
http://www.anf.nildram.co.uk/locations so if anyone has a spare moment and
fancies their locative skills, feel free to offer some suggestions.

Many thanks,
-Neil F.

I think I may have answered my own question - looks like various locations
around the Killarney National Park.

Hi, Neil.

I wondered if it was in co Kerry somewhere. How did you figure it out?

Hi Neil,
The first few pictures are certainly Killarney, but most tourists would have
visited there, so their actual ancestral home could be somewhere else.
The photo showing the schoolhouse would be the key to a precise village or
townland. Check out Google for local Kerry websites, or try emailing
localh...@kerrylibrary.ie a copy of the school picture.

Hi Alison. Thanks for taking a look.

I tried looking on a map of Ireland for the shape of lake/lough in the
panorama pic, but couldn't find anything suitable. So I memorised the shapes
of the mountain ranges in the my pictures and started browsing through
Google images of loughs and lakes. Wasn't long before I detected a mental
match with the skyline in a Killarney view. So I closed in on Killarney pics
and bumped into the top image on http://www.vacationkillarney.com/Jarvey.htm
which is a dead ringer (minus the slightly cheesy jarveys) for the 2nd
picture down on my web page. The Gap of Dunloe picture was soon matched via
Google images too, so that clinched it.

Having said that, Killarney being such a tourist destination probably means
my parents chose it just for a nice holiday, and not for knocking on distant
relatives' doors, so I suspect I'm still no closer to an Irish connection.
Nice to be able to put some captions on the family pictures though.

-Neil.
