RC Irish who Registered w/ Church of IRE

Someone from Ireland told me that many Roman Cath. Irish back in 17th and/
or 18th centuries registered w/ Church of Ireland merely to avoid sanctions &
other problems. If this is true, how would I go about looking up Ch or IRE
