One of the biggest obstacles I have run across in my research is surname misspelling in Internet resources. Some of the misspellings are from the source. My great grandfather's USA draft card listed his country of origin as Denmark even though he really was from Germany. Was this a common way to get around an issue of the times?

While looking at some dimly microfilmed records recently I realized that a surname in my line had evolved from Rogges to Robers. The region is Dreierwalde in Westphalia c. 1800.
