My GGGrandfather Gerhard Bender was born in H.Homburg,Germany 1825 his
wife Anna Maria Kloss/Gloscz Bender in Alsace,France 1832.I am trying to
establish the Location/distance of Homburg (which I believe is the one
in the Saarland although H. Homburg could be the Landgraviate of
Hessen-Homburg which would put it further away from Alsace) to a list of
the closest villages of Alsace(within 10 miles)?I would think that they
were married because their villages were close. Is that a reasonable
assumption?Hopefully I can find her village also? They were Catholic and
I believe they were married before they came to the U.S. in 1852 as the
birthdate for their first son George was Sept.1852/54.
I've heard Homburg is close to the river Saar.Does that divide Germany
from France and is Homburg home to the German medical university?
I would appreciate any help as this is one of the first times I've tried
to find out about my family in Germany,
Greg Bender

What do you mean by "H.Homburg"?

That is in favor of Homburg/Saar. (see: http://www.homburg.de)

In Homburg/Saar there's today a large medical facility (university
clinicum), AFAIK it existed even before WW2.

The Saar is a river coming from Alsace/Vosges (today in France),
crosses the border to Germany near Saarbrücken where it is also the
border for a few kilometers. It ends up into the Mosel river near
Trier.

Homburg isn't really near the Saar river but belongs to the political
region "Saarland", that's where the suffix comes from.

Perhaps the following map from 1880 is of help to you? Homburg is in
the square E4.

Thanks to all for their suggestions, info about the region, etc. I believe
my Bender ancestors came from Homburg in the Saar even though Homburg is
further away from Alsace where my GGGrandmother was born than I
originally thought.
