I have a photo of my 4th great grandparents home near Hamburg. It is an
imposing multistory stone chateau with turrets, but otherwise sitting on a
barren hill. My grandmother claims the house is still there and that a friend
visiting the area took a picture of it several years ago. Of course she can't
find the more recent photo and doesn't remember any other details, but she
does have an oil painting she made from the photo that shows it sitting on a
river bluff near a stone bridge with arches. Does anyone know an address of a
history society in the Hamburg area that I could send a copy of the photo to
for possible identification? Or any other suggestions for trying to locate
it.

Thanks,

Have you tried asking your mother's friend, who took the more recent
photo? He/she may have a better memory of where the house stood or
stands.

The trouble with chasing down a historical society in the Hamburg area
is that "near Hamburg" quickly ends up being not in Hamburg at all.
Hamburg is a city-state in Germany, and you don't have to be too far
away to be in Schleswig-Holstein or Niedersachsen.

If it is in Hamburg, you may want to try

Stiftung zur Erhaltung von Bau- und Kunstdenkm"alern
Dragonerstall 13
