Be grateful for any help locating a German record e.g. perhaps a
newspaper or cemetery reference ? A photo of his burial place exists
"somewhere", & Google has Brackwede cemetery nearby) for - 1922 death
of Charles (Carl) STREIFF b. Bendigo Vic, Australia of German parents.
We know a lot about his parents and siblings, his will leaves his
business to 'son Leo' and Catherine Power (common law wife?) - property
value 7 thousands pounds or so.

Carl was a tobacconist in Melbourne City, born c.1868. He travelled a
lot, (listed as single in ship records) and in 1922 April-May he went
Sydney-San Francisco by sea, thence Ancestry.com has him NYork to
London in Sept 1922 and staying at the Bedford Hotel London.

Think he may have spent some time visiting relaties in US and likely
Germany as well, who we'd like to know more about.

But by Oct 28th 1922 the Melbourne Argus reported in Family Notices,
at "BIELEFELD " W. GERMANY abt 100km from Hanover Charles Edward
Streiff suddenly died -aged in his 50s.

Many thanks

Di Allen

the informations you have tie in: Brackwede is today (as of 1927) a part
of the town Bielefeld.

It has to be assumed that your ancestor did not visit relatives in
Bielefeld (there are only less than 50 STREIFF in the telephone
directory, none in Bielefeld or even farther surrounding) but was there
for business. Bielefeld and Buende in the near surrounding was the
center of german cigar production (some famous trademarks are still in
use, but nowadays produced elsewhere).

I suggest that for ancestry purposes you follow the "swiss route".

Many thanks for this information - his parents were Edward and Doris
Witt , am told b. Hanover and Hamburg, at St. Michael's cathedral
there, marriage record was found for 1852.
I was thinking perhaps the local cemetery might have a record for this
son Carl Edward 1922.

Thanks Bernd for looking up those names - I suppose he was just
visiting in business after all -due to that cigar connection with
Bielefeld. He did take some time to go from Sydney to Germany, via USA,
almost 6 months, so I thought visiting relatives might have been
possible, perhaps some were in the USA.
His mother Doris Witt was christened 1831 in Neuhof, Hamburg.
