Thank you, this will be very useful.

Would a map for the 1840s be similar? Can someone recommend one?

Danke!

German surnames include Bohn, Volz, Spoerl, Maus, Michel, Schmidt.

Carol,

There are many sites of Germanic maps on-line but I might guess for 1840 specifically the sites might be limited. However, you could try the Images Link from Google < http://www.google.com > (which probably direct is < http://images.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi > and also Bilder Link at < http://www.google.de/ > (which probably a direct address would be < http://images.google.de/imghp?hl=de&tab=wi > for < map + prussia + 1840 > or < map + preussen + 1840 >.

For a quick search various years in Germanic history, but not exactly 1840, should be found off the Links
< http://www.preussenchronik.de/karte_jsp/jahr=1618.html > and the lower-on-the-page maps at
< http://www.rollintl.com/roll/prussia.htm >

I have placed a large collection of Prussian (and other) maps here:

Enjoy!
