Hi All--
I not only do not speak French I do not type very well either!
In my prior message the subject should have been "French/English
Messages" and thoough should be "though".

Dick -- Many understand your plight, however, we don't want to exclude
those who cannot write in English, do we? Perhaps you could ask for an
English translation of an interesting topic. Many French Canadians and
Frenchmen/women/persons do read & write in both languages. Bet many
would do what they can to make it possible for people like you to get at
least the gist of a message. We are all pursuing genealogy as a hobby
and enjoy this dialogue, so don't hesitate to ask. The question that
you posed will help many who are reluctant to do so themselves.

There seems to be an awful lot of messages in French on this list. I read
French laboriously with a dictionary and it sure makes it difficult
sometimes. So, even thoough some of the messages appear interesting I end
up deleting because of the language hassle. Sometimes I know I am missing

I, for one, would appreciate those who want to send a message in French

I suppose I will get some reaction to this but I feel it had to be said.

I was very surprised to read that you think this newsgroup is particularly
for those with French-Canadian ancestors. I thought those of us whose
ancestors who came directly to America without making a detour to Canada
first were just as worthy. And I know that many people in this newsgroup who
live in France have been tremendously helpful and kind in assisting me, even
though I do not know French. Particularly Denis Cheyrouz, who not only has
sent me information he found in France about my ancestors there, but has also
taken the time to translate it in English for me. I certainly can have no
quarrel about the French not writing in English, when I cannot write in
French.

I read a little French, but can't write it. I have sharpened my french
skills a bit by reading postings in french when I had the time, and
deleting when I didn't. I have had occasion to post to the
french-speaking mailing list in English, and no one there told me to go

Dick,
That is correct, you are wrong. ;-) I don't think that restriction
has been
put on this list. I, for one, am glad to have anybody with information I
might
possibly use contribute to the list. I also do not speak French. I have
learned
to recognize French genealogical abbreviations. Does that mean I speak an
abbreviated version of French? :-) I have ordered a translation program
which
has been highly recommended to me called "French Assistant" but it has not
arrived yet so I cannot personally vouch for it. The price was $59. and
can be
ordered from www.softwarecenter.com. They also had some more high-powered
higher priced programs.

Even if you replied in English to a French e-mail that contained a name that
was of interest, I am sure that person would find someway to reply. And
vice versa.

Hi all,
I am a French Canadian who appreciate this newsgroup and I did ask
my questions in French. I seem to be getting a better response here
than in the other newsgroup which is totally French. I have just started
my family tree and have not researched my French ancestors yet but my
French-Canadian ones.
I will try and remember that my French questions would be interesting
for English speaking people also and to translate them.
Thanks for your comments,

You are right to be wrong...
As the proponent of that list I can say it was NEVER intended to
be limited to those who speak English.
>> is for French speaking people only.

Many messages in French are directed to those who live in French.
While some of them may be of secondary interest for those who don't
speak French, I think the author don't always have the time to
translate all of them and giving the permission to some voluntary
to translate them should be the more you should expect.
Also, many persons who post in French can't repeat the same message
in English without corruption the actual meaning of the original
message (since they are not fluent in English).

I was already said and it will probably be repeated in a few months.
Please take Internet for what it is: an international forum where
not everybody is limited to one language. While it maybe not what
you want, it is what is there. Also, there are people that will just
stop posting if they find there are "forced" to translate anything
interesting they write. For myself, I decided to stop cross-posting
to soc.genealogy.french what I send to fr.rec.genealogie. (I presume
this message followed my recent message "Une autoroute dans la mare").

I agree. All I ask is that the subject line refer to the names or subject
properly. If that is of interest, I'll take care of the rest, including
any required translations or replies.
As long as it uses a western alphabet.
