For anyone in the UK who's planning to buy FTM 2010, but doesn't know
which package to buy...
You might like to know that the so-called Upgrade Edition of FTM 2010
(retailing around £19.99, compared to £29.99 for Deluxe and £39.99 for
Platinum) will perform a full installation, and does not need a prior
installation of a previous version, unlike most other "upgrade" packages.
If all you want is the program itself, and you don't care about Ancestry
subs or the extra printed materials, get the Upgrade Edition, and save
yourself a note or two.

That certainly wasn't my experience. There were no questions asked,
either at the point of sale or during installation. I don't think
retailers would be interested in policing this sort of thing anyway -
nor indeed the makers of FTM. It's an open secret that FTM doesn't have
any form of copy protection, so any sale's a good sale.
Looking at the packaging, and the licensing information, there's
absolutely no mention of a need for a previous installation. In fact,
the only place where upgrade is mentioned at all is in the name of the
package. For that reason, I'd treat "Upgrade" as just a branding, rather
than a legal or moral requirement. As far as I can tell, the UK
so-called "Upgrade Edition" is the same as the "Essentials Edition" on
sale elsewhere in the world.
Where do you get that idea from? Who keeps receipts for several years?
On standard upgrade programs, the program "reads" your computer to look
for earlier versions. I keeps what basic files it needs, dumps the rest,
and adds the upgrade. Someone suggests that doesn't happen with FTM, but
in my own copies' previous incarnations, the upgrade has always
overwritten the previous version.
I guess it depends on where you buy it. I was asked for my receipt in
order to get the cheaper price. But I did buy mine from a Users Group
of which I am a member.
I am also aware that there is really no difference to the contents of
the disc. You get a complete new install from the disc and you can
leave your older version behind if you want to. I ran FTM 2006 along
with FTM 2009 for some time.
Someone mentioned that it is easily copied. Yes I know that is the
case, but can you register a copy?

What country are you in?

I THINK I have.
You certainly can. There's no way for the Ancestry/FTM people to know
whether you bought it or used a bootleg. As a point of principle, I
always buy. Since I'm in the software industry I'd be hypocritical if I
didn't!
