How can I get FTM to keep a style on a family tree? I have to load a
default style every time I open a tree. It's a smallfault but
irritating.

By default, Family Tree Maker remembers the tree style you select and uses
it for the same tree until you change those settings. That is, if you choose
to have the names on a descendant tree in blue and the names on an ancestor
tree in red, those trees will have separate styles and will remain that way
until you change them.

But's that the problem. It keeps reverting to the basic default style of
gold and grey, but every time I change it to black and white it asks me
to save the changes then doesn't.

What exactly are you trying to do? Also, go to Help and choose About and
tell me what program name, version and date are displayed.

It's version 2.0a. I'm trying to change the default style. You right
click on the backhroud which brings up a selection screen of different
colours borders etc. While all these can be selected and the style saved
and applied to the tree, the next time you open the tree, the style is
back to the default settings.

I don't think this is Family Tree Maker. Can you verify this for me from
Help-About in your program?

I never said it was. It's called Family Tree by GSP

Derek,

That's why I wanted to verify the exact program. I hope you can find someone
to offer some help with this.

Don't worry I can live with it. I'll probablygo for another program in
the near future - any suggestions?

It is considered tacky for him to say it, probably, but --
One *assumes* you've been reading the sig on Paul Burchfield's
messages to you? (G)

If you have not, then I submit that many people use and like
Family Tree Maker (known here as FTM or FTW) which is marketed by
the company for which he works.  Many people do not use it and/or
do not like it.  Still, there's a free demo on the website you
can
try.

And if you've a 400mHz+ CPU, and you're in no hurry, you might
look
at Ultimate Family Tree.  Many people use it and like it, but I
find
it intolerably slow.

And for bedrock dependability, it's tough to beat PAF:  its
company
is unlikely to either merge or fold. (g)

Derek,

Perhaps you didn't say "Family Tree Maker" but you did say: "How
can I get FTM to keep a style on a family tree? I have to load a
default style every time I open a tree. It's a smallfault (sic)
but irritating.", which started this thread.

If it's called Family Tree by GSP why is it abbreviated FTM?

Apologies - I didn't check my CD properly and didn't realise there were
two packages with similar names - very similar by the look of it.
