Welsh relationship Mab-gwyn ???
I have a Welsh 1911 census image where the Parents have been married 12 years, she has had one son, and the son is 14 years old. The boy's relationship to the Head (father) is given as "Mab-gwyn". Simple translation programs suggest "son - white", though white has sometimes a suggestion of pure or holy.... more »

Ancestry
Hello Ancestry seems to think that just because I live in France, I need French records! Anyway, I have a question that has probably been answered before. How do I get back to the 'old' way of doing things - like putting in the folio number and other references, without all the clart that this organisattion seems to think we need? Maybe I'm just not patient enough.... more »

1911 Census - search by address address
I was searching for my great uncle Francis Derham (born 1873) who was a schoolmaster at Douai Abbey School (formerly St Mary's College) Woolhampton, Berkshire. I haven't been able to trace him under any spelling of Frances/Frank etc. He was there in 1901 and taught there uyntil his death in 1941. So, my question is:... more »

Summer Hill, Birmingham
Hi Could anyone tell me what kind of a residence would at Summer Hill, Birmingham, in 1820. Was it a posh area at that time. I had a look on Google but it seems to be all country by a lake. Does anyone know where I can find a photograph of houses there. JUDY ELKINGTON [N. Derbyshire, England]... more »

Family Tree Maker 2010 - a little heads-up
(Copied to s.g.c in case anyone there doesn't already know.) For anyone in the UK who's planning to buy FTM 2010, but doesn't know which package to buy... You might like to know that the so-called Upgrade Edition of FTM 2010 (retailing around £19.99, compared to £29.99 for Deluxe and £39.99 for Platinum) will perform a full installation, and does not need a prior... more »

Joseph Bazalgette marriages
I was asked earlier if I had investigated the ancestry of Peter BAZALGETTE, the TV tycoon who created Big Brother. At that stage I hadn't but, never able to resist a challenge, I have now! And yes, Eve, much to your chagrin I imagine, I can tell you that he is indeed a great- great-grandson of Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891), the brilliant civil engineer who... more »

WDYTYA went for £10,000
I heard on Radio 2 that a place on "Who do you think you are?" being auctioned for children in need went for over £10,000. Perhaps they would have got more had they posted details here :-) or perhaps not.
