I have a letter from two spinster sisters (Agnes and Elizabeth PETERS) written in 1922 in which they state they had moved to live with their cousin (a retired Schoolmaster, due to ill health) and his wife. The address used was 364 Hanworth Road, Hounslow.
The sisters died in 1930 (February and November) aged 83 and 74 respectively and both certificates show the informant to be –“ F. W. DAWS, cousin, in attendance, 61 Whitton Road, Hounslow.”
Having researched their mother's line (WELLS) I can't find any evidence of an F. W. DAWS connection. Perhaps their father (Daniel PETERS) had a sister though I haven't been able to trace either his parents or siblings, so this DAWS may be a breakthrough needed to continue the search.
Are there registers of School Masters or Teachers prior to 1922 ? this could give me his full name and maybe a clue to his age.
Any suggestions on other sources to try would be appreciated.

A possibility:
FreeBMD has a Frederick William Daws marrying in Brentford in the December quarter of 1892, 3a 178. Spouse either Sarah Benham or Ellen Amelia Clark
There's another (or possibly the same) Frederick William Daws marrying in Brentford in the September quarter of 1908, 3a 268. No information on spouse unfortunately.

Schoolmasters came in great variety in the era of DAWS but if he was a graduate there were relatively few places he could have come from, and in Hounslow relatively few schools at which he could have taught. In that era people did not have cars and commute miles to work. They walked or went by bike or bus.
Information about the subject(s) taught would limit the choice further. Some subjects were taught in one kind of school but not in others.
The WELLS and DAWS were sufficiently old to be found in the 1901 and earlier Censuses and you might find they are parts of a local family. Hanworth Road and Whitton Road are but a stroll apart. there might be others in the neighbourhood.

In 1901 the two sisters (born in Lambeth) were living on High Street, Esher, Surrey. Agnes (b. 1847) and Elizabeth (b.1856) were 'Living on Means'.
There is a Frederick W. Daws (born in Hounslow) age 19 living with his parents and a whole slew of siblings at 47 Holloway Street, Hounslow, North.
1881 census shows the two sisters living with their parents on High Street, Esher.
1871 census has the family including 2 sons still living on High Street. 1861 same except there is a third son. 1851 living at Vauxhall Row, Lambeth only 3 children born at this stage. 1841 might be them Daniel Peters and Charlotte Wells, working at Eaton Place, Belgrave (married Jun qtr of 1843)
I kept checking hoping that I might find a sister, or parent living with them, but no luck.

Hi Peter
I think my very first move would be to search the probate indexes to see if Agnes and Elizabeth PETERS left a will or an estate to be administered. Being spinsters they may well have named a number of relatives.
I would expect any half-decent Mormon Family History Library to have the Probate Indexes, also the Victorian State Library and possibly the Genealogical Society of Victoria.
This would seem to be the family in the 1881 census:
Daniel PETERS Head M Male 67 Twickenham, Middlesex, England Retired Grocer Parish Clerk Charlotte PETERS Wife M Female 65 Denham, Buckingham, England Agnes PETERS Daur U Female 33 Lambeth, Surrey, England Elizabeth PETERS Daur U Female 25 Lambeth, Surrey, England Dressmaker ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Source Information: Census Place Esher, Surrey, England Family History Library Film 1341198 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 0839 / 28 Page Number 50
I would also have a look to see if Daniel PETERS left a will. It will probably entail a few years search but you should be able to recognise his entry if you see it by his occupation.
Have you seen the other census entries for Daniel's household (looking for siblings, also aunts, uncles etc)?
I presume that this is the marriage of Agnes and Elizabeth's parents
Marriages Jun 1843 PETERS Daniel St George Han Sqr 1 10 WELLS Charlotte St Geo Han Sq 1 10
The marriage certificate should give the name of Daniel's father and his occupation to help you look for Daniel's parents' family in other censuses - and hopefully find any of Daniel's siblings.
Back to Agnes and Elizabeth's death certificates. How clear is the name of the informant? Is there any possibility that the name of the cousin may have been F.W. DAVIS?
Hope this helps Graham Hoult Kirwee, Canterbury, NZ

Had he just retired, or had he been retired for years? Have you tried looking in a street directory to see who they were with ?

Have you tried looking for him in the 1901 census?

I found FreeBMD has some male DAWS marrying in the same year/quarters as female WELLS. (may be more in different year/quarters)
Dec qtr 1841 James DAWS, Ann WELLS, registered Guildford. Dec qtr 1851 William DAWS , Mary Ann Sarah WELLS, registered N.Aylesford
