A person on here showed me a link to a Dutch website that lists the
names of people and their date of birth. I found a listing for a guy
whose first name was "Gradus." His date of birth matches that for an
ancestor I`m attempting to do genealogical research on, but his first
name was "Gerhard," and his middle initial was "J" (the middle name of
"Gradus" was "Johannes"), so it looks like "Gradus" could be my Gerhard,
except that the first names of the two aren`t the same. Is the name
"Gradus" derived from the name "Gerhard" (like the English name "Bill"
is the shortened form of the more formal first name "William"), or are
the two names completely unrelated?

Bill (William!),
the name "Gradus" is indeed derived from the name "Gerhard" (like the

English name "Bill"
is the shortened form of the more formal first name "William")

It could also have been "Gerardus"

Gradus is short for Gerardus, in later times shortenend to Gerard.
Gerhard is german for Gerard.
So you found the right person.
