I'm tracing the SMART family of New Zealand. John SMART married Ellen or
Helen HOLDEN in 1882 in Clyde, Otago, New Zealand. They had Daniel, John,
Charles, Robert? and Esther that I know of. John was born in Warrnambool
Victoria in 1856 and he is the only one to cross the Tasman and settle
there. Most other SMARTs remained in Warrnambool or various parts of
Victoria. Hope someone is researching this family.

Hi Terry,
Since your people died in the Auckland area in the 1940's it is possible
that they may have a probate will, this being the case the will, will be
found at National Archives, Mt Wellington, Auckland.
The probate will, will give the date of death plus may give family
information as well, the death date will give you a week in which to
search the Auckland News Papers for a Death notice this more than likely
will tell you where they were buried and again possibly family information.
Auckland Public Library has all the Auckland News Papers and the 1940's
are on micro film.
If you would like I could check this out next week, if you would like me
to check at National Archives please do contact me directly, you have my
non news group e-mail.

Hope this helps some.
David

Hi Lynette,
What do you know about your BEGG family?
Are they from Scotland?
Reason I ask is that I am a descendant from one John BEGG who came to
New Zealand in the 1860's from Scotland.

As for your SMART's going by the NZ Family research directory of 2005
put out by the New Zealand Society of Genealogists it looks as if no one
is researching your Smarts in the Otago area.
I would recommend if it is possible that you first phone your local LDS
FHC and ask if they have the New Zealand BMD index micro fiche, if they
have then it would pay to visit and transcribe all the BMD's that are
listed as having taken place in Otago for the Smarts, once you have done
this then you can start ordering the Genealogical copies of the
Certificates.
By Getting Genealogical copies you are getting an exact copy of what is
written or typed into the actual Register not some ones interpretation
of the event.

Hi Lynette,
National Archives hold all probated wills, your best bet is to approach
the Area office, I suspect in this case it will be Dunedin.
Photo copies of the wills can be got and generally cost $0.20 per A4
page, so if you cost the wills out at about $1.40NZD each then you ought
to be close, then there is postage on top normally about $1.20 NZD for
20 A4 pages within NZ, do not know if they have a separate rate for
international though.
Hope this helps some.
David.
