I have traced my DE MALMANCHE side of the family back to 1840 in Akaroa,
NZ and found that my 3rd g grandfather married a Mary Ann RHODES. My
Nana always said Mary Ann's father was famous for something. I have not
been able to find Mary Ann RHODES'S birth date yet but did look in the
NZ dictionary of biographies and found a reference to a William Barnard
RHODES who had a daughter named Mary Ann, by an unknown Maori woman. I
have never heard anything about having Maori blood and wonder if anyone
else knows anything about this family, or could tell me how to go about
finding Maori births in the 1840s.
