My great uncle Roland emigrated to Australia & died some time in the 70s, 80s or 90s (sorry to be so vague). He was born in 1915 in Birmingham. I'm very familiar with UK sources but know nothing at all about Australian ones. Is anyone able to direct me towards any resources that can be accessed from the UK?
Any pointers appreciated & more than happy to reciprocate if anyone needs help on UK sources.

Unfortunately not - I realise it could be a forlorn hope but its a loose end that I'd like to tie down. The only information I have is that he "went to Australia"

Hi Di,
The National Archives of Australia hold immigration records. See www.naa.gov.au for more info on just what they hold and how to access it. Try the search first but if you don't get anything do check out the site to see how complete the indexing and digitising is, and how to get the info if it isn't online yet. I haven't had to get into immigration records myself.
BMDs are kept by the States and Territories. Some are available online, some are not. You won't find death records if he died too recently as Australian records are not released until a certain number of years (which differs from State to State) after the event. A list of what is available and where to find it is at: http://www.coraweb.com.au/bdmaut.htm
Beyond that, the National Library of Australia has quite a few useful links to various newspaper or cemetery indexes and other resources. The page you're looking for is http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/eresources/action/browse?tid=145&sid=2 Some are available on the internet, others you might be able to get someone to do a lookup for you.

>Hi Di,
Thanks everyone who chipped in - I'll follow up on the leads given.
Shelly - apologies for the misleading signature - the "DI" is actually my initials not my name! I've changed the sig before I mislead anyone else.

Is anyone with the Victorian Death Index CD (1921-1985) able to check for David's great uncle?

Whoops! Not your fault - you'd thing someone on a genealogy list would be more observant with names, wouldn't you?! Shelley

Don't write off Roland Arthur Bennett, born about 1909, which is in cooie of 1915..
I have seen Arthur and Alfred interchanged at least twice! Both times it was the second name. In my experience death registers/certificates often record the wrong second and/or third given names.
