Has anyone got any suggestions for good historical resources on the
Muswellbrook area? I'm starting to do some research on behalf of someone
else and only have experience in research in SA and Vic. I will certainly
be using the pioneers CD roms, but I'm wonderign if there's anything in
the way of northern NSW specific material, particularly any that can be
accessed here in Canberra.

Thanks,
Keryn

Well ... many family historians not resident in Canberra would envy your
ready access to the collections of the National Library of Australia!

An excellent starting point would be with Christine Eslick et al,
"Bibliography of New South Wales local history", UNSW Press, Kensington,
1987.

Hi for historical information etc you could try the library or Mines dept.
This area is mostly coal mining.

One company that mined there was called Drayton Coal. Otherwise the usuual
genealogy research would be the same.

Another avenue could be to phone the local council and ask them re:
Historical Society in the area. Some councils have their own Historical
information on request, at least ours does, so worth a try.

Regards Yanina.

Dear Keryn, Suggest you go direct to the central records for the Hunter
Valley:

Local Studies Section,
Region Public Library,
Laman St.,
NEWCASTLE. NSW. 2300  Phone (049) 294 531.  Fax (049)296 568

The area covered is from Wyee to Foster, Ocean west to Willow Tree and
Cassillis, taking in Muswellbrook.

Newspapers are an important Source, "Maitland Mercury" copies held from
1843 is the oldest, and covered all the Hunter Valley at the time.  They
also have extensive records on the mining and grape growing industries in
Muswellbrook.

Regards,  Joan Elliott.
