Can anyone tell me where St James, County of Cumberland, Church of
England, Sydney was in 1847. Does it still exist.

Where would I be able to obtain a copy of a Baptismal Certificate for a
Baptismal conducted at the above church in 1847.

St.James Church (a fine church still existing opposite the entrance to
Phillip Street in the city - can't think of the name of the other street)
was the major Church of England church in the early days, including 1847.
The whole parish was called St. James also. (Lois can get a copy of the
baptism certificate from the Registrar of Births, Deaths & Marriages.)
Another person queried St. James PARISH recently & I want to point out
that I had ancestors married in 1848 at St. Marys Catholic Church (on the
site of the present day St. Marys Cathedral) & their certificate says they
married "in a Catholic ceremony" at "St. James Parish" but it did not
mention the name St. Marys Church. As I knew they had definitely married
there I contacted the archivist at St. Marys Cathedral who explained to me
that St. James Parish was the CIVIL name of the entire parish - regardless
of whatever religion - as the name had been based on St James C. of E.
Church originally. Care has to be taken with anything mentioning
"St.James".

"St James Church occupies a commanding site at the north end of Hyde
Park, standing in a line with the intersection of King St and Phillip
St... it was formally opened about the end of the year 1822."

from Picture of Sydney and Strangers' Guide in NSW for 1839 by James
Maclehose.

From the microfilms available at many libraries and FH Socs. of early
(pre 1856) church registers of NSW.
