A Catholic church in Melbourne, St Anthony's Glen Huntly, is celebrating 100 years.
The church has some beautiful stained glass windows manufactured by Mayer (Munich) sometime in the 1930s. Their history is unclear, Trove hasn't revealed anything, and the manufacturer has no surviving records.
We have talked with Melbourne's stained glass makers, but can find no records of how/when these rare items came to be where they are. There are other examples of the work of this manufacturer in Melbourne, so their work was well-regarded.
Having exhausted our thoughts on where to look, maybe someone here has some ideas?

I was going to suggest you contact a Sydney company that has been involved with
stained glass for about 3 generations, only to find when I googled them, the
company no longer exists. It was called Finn's Glass and there last address was
in Revesby, NSW. They had combined with their competitor some years ago. Now
they are both gone.
It may be possible to track down some of the Finn men who live around Sydney,
but they may have moved into obscurity.
It would seem that GENANZ is also moving towards its use-by date too, so I
don't hold out too much hope of getting any answers there.
Way back when MSN had its groups running, it was very active like GENANZ, When
MSN groups died that group then migrated to:

Since it's not USENET based, you don't suffer from the spam e-mail harvesters.
I suspect many of the genuine GENANZ people migrated there too.
You may want to join that group (e-mail or RSS feed) and post your message in
the GENERAL section.
Liz, the moderator is extremely helpful and may have some more ideas, and I'm
sure won't be upset with your request.
Have you searched the Australian mailing lists at Rootsweb-Ancestry:

There are a few Victorian mailing lists. Don't know if any are suitable.
The pay as you go on the list-host Ancestry seems to have killed so much of the
free sharing. Doesn't quite make sense.
Perhaps the Glen Eira City Council Library might hold or have indexed the
LOCAL newspapers for the year(s) when you think the windows were installed.
I know you are a Canberra resident but perhaps so you might have to do some
long distance work. The archives of the Catholic newspaper "The Advocate" might
help. It is no longer published a a weekly. It was replaced by a montly
magazine and shares the diocesan offices in East Melbourne.

A major expense such as stained glass windows would require Diocesan
permission, approval and payment before purchase. According to the parish web
page, the present church was constructed between 1919 (foundation stone) and
1923 (official opening) with a Fr Cremin as Parish Priest. He was replaced by a
Fr Joyce in 1934 who was PP for the next 20 years until his death. Both Irish,

Comparing history of the stained glass windows here in the 1930's building at
Oakhill, then the stained glass for St Anthony's may have come much later than
the building of the church......... that is, when money became available. In
the interim perhaps simple coloured glass was initially installed in the church
until a generous benefactor appeared !

Do the windows have any names mentioned? Often there are little plaques
saying "donated by SoAndSo in memory of SomeOne". That might help to
determine the time frame more accurately. Since "The Age" isn't in Trove, we
are missing a major Melbourne newspaper so anything to narrow down the time
frame might be useful. Similarly are there any photos of the church that
might indicate when the windows were or weren't present?

I remember St Anthony's well; I grew up just around the corner.
Have you tried the records of the relevant Roman Catholic Diocese? They
may have details of the building of the church and of subsequent
modifications. Perhaps the original architects or builders might have
something if they still exist.
And yes, it is a real shame that neither the Age or the Herald/Sun are
on Trove - it's such a staggeringly useful source, but has its
frustrating gaps!
However, the Age /is /on Google News: www.news.google.com/newspapers
Unfortunately the archive is only partially indexed (I believe the
Google gave up on the project partway through), so the searching is a
bit of a lottery, but you can look day by day and page by page through
the papers once you narrow the time-zone. Because newspapers have a
fixed structure, you usually don't have to look through literally every
page to find something.

Thanks to everyone, on and off list, who has written back. Your helpful suggestions are appreciated and are being acted on.
Tony's point about Diocesan approval is most interesting. We plebs in the pews probably had little idea of the interaction between the parishes and HO but, as the church was probably the property of the local cathedral, that makes sense - just that we were unaware.
We'll keep hunting...
