Hi,

I am wondering if anyone can advise me if there
used to be a "private hospital" in St George's Rd,
Malvern, Victoria? Also from the birth notice I
have found it was possibly called "Falkland"
either Falkland hospital or the old house just had
been given the name Falkland.

The time frame of the birth was 1902 but I am
hoping that it held the name for quite a few years
later :-)

Thank you
Pat

Dear Pat,

I suspect that the St Georges Rd Malvern, Vic might be actually St Georges Rd Armadale, Vic . When you look on a map it's more-or-less midway between the two. Over the years the powers-that-be have played with the municipal boundaries and amalgamated local government councils.
see http://www.stonnington.vic.gov.au/explore-stonnington/history/

Whatever the case, both are now incorporated under Stonnington. (City)

Malvern Historical Society
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~malvern/contact_us.htm
would most likely be able to confirm your suspicions.

St Georges Rd is relatively short. There is an Anglican Church at the end of the street. There appears to have been lots of renovation/ renewal replacement of the old weatherboard houses circa late 1800's early 1900's visible with Google street view.

In Sydney before street addresses had numbers, houses just had names. I imagine this was the case in Melbourne, too. These were critical in finding house locations then. These days, the names are only "ceremonial" in status with the street number mandatory. Pity the poor Postman both then and now!!!!!

I hope the library or historical societies can help you.

Cheers,

Tony Moore

Hi Colin,

Thank you very much for your input and it looked
interesting (and still may be right) but I googled
both suburbs and there is a St Georges in both. I
would need to confirm whether they were both there
in the early 1900s.

Thank you it is well worth considering.
Pat

Pat,

The 1901 Sands and McDougal Directory has a nurse listed as living at number 7 St Georges Road, Malvern. Maybe she acted as a midwife.

Happy Researching

Hi Pat,
I did a search on the 1904 S&McD CD - only a Falkland Terrace in Fitzroy.
I have the 1928 S&McD book and only names are listed but no occupations and
it's not listed under private or public hospitals.

When looking through the book, I looked at Hospitals and mostly surnames are
listed of the midwives or nurses that ran them.

Of course, that could have been a private residence. But there is this one
in 1899:

ALEXANDER. —On the 4th July, at Falkland, St.

George's road, Malvern, the wife of John M. Alexander —a daughter.

So it does seem to be a business address.

Doug.
