Dear Pat,
I suspect that the St Georges Rd Malvern, Vic might be actually St Georges Rd Armadale, Vic . When you look on a map it's more-or-less midway between the two. Over the years the powers-that-be have played with the municipal boundaries and amalgamated local government councils.
see

Whatever the case, both are now incorporated under Stonnington. (City)
Malvern Historical Society

would most likely be able to confirm your suspicions.
St Georges Rd is relatively short. There is an Anglican Church at the end of the street. There appears to have been lots of renovation/ renewal replacement of the old weatherboard houses circa late 1800's early 1900's visible with Google street view.
In Sydney before street addresses had numbers, houses just had names. I imagine this was the case in Melbourne, too. These were critical in finding house locations then. These days, the names are only "ceremonial" in status with the street number mandatory. Pity the poor Postman both then and now!!!!!
I hope the library or historical societies can help you.
Cheers,
Tony Moore
