Hi List,

The above person fought in the 1st W. W. and as far as I know was not killed
in action. Does anyone have any knowledge of him? I do not even know what
the Christian name initial M. stands for.

There are quite a few Web links, Glenys, including the Northern Ireland PRO
at the National Archives. Apparently they became the Royal Ulster Rifles
in 1921. Google Images turned up a couple of member lists of the units,
but there were several, up to No. 14 at least. Finding what page those
lists came from could give you the full personnel. Perhaps you need to
ask on a list dealing with Ireland or Ulster? The number should identify him.

The terms Northern Ireland and Ulster are not interchangeable. Of the nine
counties in the province of Ulster, three are in the Republic of Ireland
and six are in Northern Ireland.

Hello Doug and Dennis,
I thank you very much for your replies/suggestions. I will definitely follow
up on those, after the grandkids get back to school. My brother has my
grandfathers war medals, so last visit to him I had a look at the medals,
having not looked at them before. Well, only one belonged to him, one to his
brother and one to Pte. Morris, have no idea who he was or why my
grandfather/family have the medal. So that is where my query stems from.
Next question, where would one start looking for military medals that are
not in the possession of the family?

Anybody's guess. They have no Certificate of Title. Some V.C.'s have been
sold at auction, and finish up in the hands of an unrelated person. You
need some kind of idea of the likely place, or you might as well forget
about it. The War Museum may have them, or may be able to help.

V.C.'s are exceptional, of course. Staff with rows and rows of medals
aren't necessarily collecting a bravery award every week. Most of them are
campaign medals, merely saying that the wearer was at such and such a
theatre of war.
