Hi all,

Just in case there is someone still here other than spammers, I have had no
posts since 23 March.
Has everyone completed their family histories?

I need my daily lurk :>)

Apart from Denis Ahern on the 26th, same here. I wonder if genealogy has
run its course as the "in" hobby that everybody wants to get involved in?

Don't remind me about my family history. I should have finished it by now,
and I have done only one-quarter.

Doug.

People are now turning to Facebook Genealogy pages. I am amazed at just how many there are. There are over 760 members on "Australian Genealogy" and are very active at helping people with look ups, photographing graves and support in time of happiness and grief.

Hi Doug and Carolyn,

I haven't finished my family history in any part - I keep finding new
contacts (3rd cousins) and actually meeting 2nd cousins I didn't know
existed.

I'm not keen on facebook, too open and not nice sometimes.

I'll just continue to lurk in case someone comes back.

I also am lurking but as I am on about 7 other Lists, one in particular
which is very busy, I had not noticed that this List had declined so much.

Perhaps Facebook has taken the place of the mailing lists? Forums and
social networking sites have now largely replaced Usenet.

"Beyond Blue" now has an online "Men in Sheds" at
http://www.theshedonline.org.au/ with a page for genealogists. I signed up
for it at the beginning, but haven't been back. Basically, the online Shed
is for handymen, like a physical Shed, but the Internet allows a wider
scope.

Doug,
a "Blue Voice": see http://www.beyondblue.org.au/ - unfortunately, there is
no direct link. Look in the third column. At the top of that column, in
the news scroller, Wiggle Anthony Field had depression badly.

We are not all facebook crazy. I'll stick with what I think I know.
I have been trying to join AUS-Surnames but can't get a response, not
even from admin; anyone know what gives ?

Thanks for that URL Doug, I will put it on Australian Genealogy. It seems like a great group and I think I will keep it bookmarked for future reference.

A number of other lists have had the same comments and some others I'm
on are more or less moribund. The usual explanation is the growth of
other forums and Facebook. Although I'm a regular FB user (and don't
share other's concerns), I've never tried there, so maybe it is time to
go with the flow. It's done seem a pity though to lose what was a
fairly central place for everyone.

Although I've done an enormous amount of work on my tree, I still (as
noted) have lots of branches that keep turning up. I also have the
enormous brickwall of my grandmother. I've posted this request before,
so I'll try again now (next post). Let's see how alive the list is!

Best

Lloyd

I too have had no messages since March 22. Bigpond did its trick again and
the Newsgroups could not be accessed.
