Kitchens: What's the Feng Shui of Your Kitchen?

The 8 Questions to Ask

The kitchen has a special place in feng shui. The stove, in
particular, has an especially important place in the home and the
kitchen. That's because this is the appliance that generates the
meals that feed the residents of that home. On its own, though, the
kitchen is thought to press down luck in feng shui thought. That
means, even if you have good luck in this room, or bad, the kitchen by
its very nature will stifle the luck in this area.

That being said, if the kitchen is located in a good direction for you
based on your pa kua number (to determine your number, click on these
two links: link 1, link 2), then the food prepared and consumed here
will be especially beneficial. If, based on your pa kua number, this
is an unlucky area, the bad luck will be pressed down, therefore,
making this a good location for a kitchen.

Here are some more kitchen feng shui basics:

Avoid locating a bedroom over a kitchen. If this isn't possible, then
make extra sure that the bed does not share the same wall as the
stove. Likewise, try not to put a bedroom, or bed, on the other side
of the wall where your stove is placed.

Kitchens should ideally be placed near the back of the house and not
in the middle. Placement at the front of the house is also not
advisable.

Kitchens have fire in them already; don't increase the "fire energy"
by painting the kitchen red.

If your kitchen is located in the NW, SW, or center of your house:
Purchase a five-rod wind chime here to dispel some of the energy. I
must be honest that the worst possible location for a kitchen is the
NW, particularly if you cook with gas. Remove all candles from this
location and try to install an electric stove here. (Or, if you want
to remodel, move the kitchen out of this sector altogether.)

There are few absolutes in feng shui, but this is one, and that is:
no open flames in the NW sector of the home or there could be severe
losses or problems for the man of the house or the breadwinner. Or,
if you're single, there could be difficulties attracting a suitable
relationship or frequent spats and disagreements with someone you are
dating.

The only cure I'm aware of for this is to place a large urn of water
(18 X 24 inches) in the kitchen. However, this is rather cumbersome
and large vessel of water to have sitting on a cabinet or floor of
your kitchen. You might try placing a spring water dispenser to try
and help press down the fire energy located here. Try to place it
close as possible to the stove.

1. Is there at least two feet of distance between the stove and
refrigerator? If they are too close together, the refrigerator puts
out the fire of the stove, creating financial difficulties. If they
are next to each other, put a large wooden cutting board between them.

2. Can you see the toilets from the kitchen? Even a view or access
to a toilet from the kitchen is bad news. If this is the case in your
house, paint the bathroom door red, and as always, be sure to keep it
closed at all times.

3. Placement of tears? A stove placed between a refrigerator and a
sink is said to cause sadness and emotions such as those from
mourning.

4. Do you have an islands of respite? Islands serve as a helpful
feng shui feature because they are often topped with stone (which
weighs down bad luck) and are situated between things, such as the
stove and sink, or the stove and the refrigerator, thereby stopping
"arguments" between kitchen features. Count yourself lucky if you
have one. The same is true of dining tables in the kitchen.

5. Is your refrigerator stocked? A well-stocked pantry and
refrigerator are both good feng shui.

6. Do you support your stove? If the stove is below a window, the
cook will not enjoy good support.

7. Can the stove/kitchen be seen from the front door? If you can see
the stove or the kitchen from your front door, then you could be
losing opportunities. Block the view of the view from the front door
with a screen or a plant.

8. Do you enter through the kitchen? If so, you could struggle with
your weight. If the first thing you see is your kitchen, you might
have difficulties with overeating. Try to enter through another door.

Fix Up Your House with Feng Shui

Getting Your House Ready for Fall

For those of us living north of the equator, our houses will soon be
closed up for the next few months. But, whether you live north or
south of the equator, it's a time of the year when humidity is low and
your hair looks good for a change! No, seriously, it's a beautiful
time of the year that almost everyone enjoys. And, regardless of
which side of the equator you live on, you are anticipating the
upcoming holidays and change of weather. This anticipation makes just
about everyone invigorated and aching to make some changes around the
house, from painting to planting, from digging to decorating.

Moving items in your house around from time to time is a good idea
anyway. We get into decorating ruts just like we do work ruts, and
rearranging is one way to get out of. (Remember, a rut is just a
grave that's open at both ends.) Moving items around also
re-energizes your home. Most of the time, rearranging energizes us.
We see things in new places, see items in our home in new ways, and
this makes us feel different, too.

If you aren't sure how to move things around in your home or how to
freshen it up, enlist a friend to help you. It's always interesting
to hear friends' opinions about your things and where they would put
something that would never have occurred to you. What else can you do
to make your house "feng-tional" for the season? Plenty! So, let's
get started. I've made a quick checklist that you might want to keep
with you so you can check off the items one by one.

Air out. While the humidity is low and air is fresh, clear stale
energies out of the house. Follow the directions in the Dear Readers
section.

Clear out. With a BIG BOX in hand, go to each room and poke through
all the drawers and closets to find at least 10 things to get rid of
from each room. You can do it! Remember, you are making room for the
new and better things to come.

Repaint. But what color, you say? Go with your personal feng shui
color. Or, go by the location of the room. My personal feeling is to
go with the compass color here. That's because if your personal color
is red and you paint your north room (with its associated black color)
red, you could have problems with your career.

In short, you won't go wrong using the compass method. However, if
you just can't bring yourself to paint your south room red, then
don't. Color is a very personal choice, so go with what you really
love or else you won't be happy no matter how good your feng shui is.
Here's a quick review of compass colors.

Compass Feng Shui Colors by Sector or Room:

North: White (because it is the color of metals and metal makes
water) is a good choice. Combine white with blue or black, or metal
colors with blue.

South: Decorate with red. Green or brown are also good enhancing
colors here. Blues and blacks could cause you to continuously
struggle for recognition.

West and NW: Yellow or gold with white accents are a good choice.
Red here can cause serious problems for the breadwinner with
superiors. Blues here would make the occupants of the room fatigued
and "swimming upstream."

SW, NE, and Center of Home: Yellow is a good color in these areas
because it is an earth color. Red accents are excellent in
combination with the yellow. You can choose colors from the yellow to
red spectrum, which also includes oranges. Greens, golds (metallic
golds), and white can hurt these sectors.

Good colors for the bedroom:

Use skin tone colors, such as beige, brown, yellow, gold, pink or
lavender on the walls.

Good colors to soothe a quarrelsome household:

If you are quarreling in the dining area (or other area of the house),
introduce the colors of gold and red to the area where the bickering
occurs, or at a central location, or close to a stairway (which
conducts chi upwards and downwards). These colors reduce bickering
and bring harmony to the home or area. I'd start by bringing in some
objects or figurines with these colors to place here before
redecorating. If it helps, then you might want to repaint using gold
and red colors, re-cover chairs, or hang curtains of red and gold.

Move the bed. Are you sleeping in your best direction? If possible,
try to sleep in an AD. If you and your spouse or partner are not both
East or West people, then make sure the breadwinner is sleeping with
his or her head in his or her AD. Make sure to observe good bed
placement feng shui by having it placed so that you see the widest
part of the room from bed.

Look underfoot. If you are considering replacing your floors, then
consider going with earth materials, such as tile, stone, marble,
etc., on the first floor of your home. This makes your home
"grounded." Put wood or carpet on the upper floors.

Think about the holidays. Be thinking ahead about where you will
place your Christmas tree, your menorah, or other religious items. A
good place for religious pictures, figurines, or items is in the NW
(with the exception of a menorah because of the flames from candles).
Consider placing either Christmas trees or menorahs in the south
portion of the house or living room; (if the living room is in the NW,
be sure to place a menorah somewhere else).

Rearrange pictures. What's hanging in your dining room? If you have
pictures of animals, move them elsewhere. These symbolize your wealth
being eaten away. Better to place a large mirror here. Do you have
pictures of other than yourself or your spouse/partner in your
bedroom? If so, take them out. Look at your pictures and paintings
and place according to the direction, i.e. water pictures in the North
part of the house, mountains, women and romantic subjects in the SW,
trees, flowers, etc, in the East. Buds of flowers, deer, cranes,
fruit-laden pictures, etc in the SE.

Check your symbols. Remember last week we talked about "Symbolic Feng
Shui" ? Well, look around at the items in your home. Gather them all
together and put them on a table. Then, sort them according to where
they are the most helpful. Then, using the list I've provided for you
below, re-arrange these items to invigorate your space.

oPut candles, lights, or red objects in the south sector. Birds,
roosters, or chickens are also good placed here.

oPlace black-colored and water-oriented objects and pictures in the
north sector of the house. Metal objects, especially those that are
gold- or black-colored, also go well here because metal makes water.

oPut plants in the southeast and east sector of the house (unless it's
a bedroom or bathroom; then the rule is no plants in the bedroom or
toilet). You can also put plants in the south sector because plants
are wood and wood feeds fire, the element for the south sector.

oPlace metal objects or gold, silver, white or beige items in the west
and NW. Radios, computers, electronics, phones, etc. are good items
for the west and northwest. A gold-colored or brass bell is excellent
here and brings good news for the breadwinner of the family. Phones
and fax machines in the NW are especially helpful here, bringing good
news from people on the phone.

oPlace books, heavy objects, and earth objects, such as globes, rocks,
geodes, crystals, etc., in the NE and SW. The NE benefits from earth
objects, which can also include vases made from porcelain, by
enhancing travel and educational luck. The SW, the corner of the
woman/mother, will benefit from the additional earth energy.

Double your happiness. Are you single and looking for a mate? Make
sure the NW and SW sectors of your home exist and are energized. If
you are a man, pay extra attention to the SW corner, and if you're a
woman, pay attention to the NW corner of your house and your bedroom.
If either of these corners of your home is missing, now you know why
you are missing your mate! Try placing a mirror in the missing area
and add extra attention to these areas of your bedroom, office (yes,
there, too!), and living room.

Dining Room Table Feng Shui

What's the Best Shape Table for Your Dining Room?

Dining room tables are very good feng shui, especially those that are
round or octagonal and seat six, eight, or ten people. However,
certain shapes of tables are better for certain directions than
others. Use the ideas below to see how your dining table stacks up.

Round or oval tables:

These round-shaped tables are excellent in dining rooms that are
situated in the North, West or Northwest. If this is where your
dining room is located and you have this shape, then you will enjoy
good feng shui from this table.

Octagonal tables:

These are good in any location! Seat everyone at the table in the
direction that is best for them. (Link takes you to Subscriber's
Page; click on Pa Kua Numbers.) Select either the health direction or
the relationship direction. Either of these would be excellent
choices to face while dining.

Square or rectangular tables:

These tables represent the wood element and are best for dining rooms
that are in the East, Southeast, or South sectors of your house. Best
choices are those tables with rounded corners rather than square,
pointed corners. Again, seat everyone by their most auspicious
directions.

Home-Buying with Feng Shui

A Checklist for Selecting Your New Home

Buying a home is a stressful experience. So much rides on a new home
because this is where you relax, have fun, sleep, eat; in short, it's
the place central to so much of your life. Plus, you also way a home
that you find pleasing on many levels: aesthetically, financially,
and spatially. It can be very stressful, because you want to be sure
that you are purchasing a home that will benefit you, rather than
burden you. But, how can you be sure you are not making a mistake?

Arm yourself with knowledge

Well, the truth is, you can't. But, you can be armed with knowledge
so that you will feel confident about your decision. The information
provided here can help keep you on track so that you remember to weigh
the positive and negative points about the space in an objective
manner, rather than getting carried away by a single feature of the
house that you just love (a beautiful kitchen, nice yard, pretty
fireplace, etc.), to the point that you overlook the negatives of the
house, and thus, make a poor decision.

Look at the space with "feng shui eyes"

When you are looking at a house – or any space for that matter – and
considering whether to buy it, it helps to look at it with "feng shui
eyes." You will want to do this once you have considered all the
other objective aspects of the house, such as square footage, number
of bedrooms and bathrooms, living areas, location, price, etc. The
next step is to run down a checklist of the subjective feng shui
considerations that will help you make a feng shui assessment.

Check the comprehensive list provided below for some of the most
common feng shui problems in houses. Even if you aren't house
hunting, this list can give you some important information that might
be very revealing about the house you are already in!

Exterior

Street: Cul-de-sac, dead end or T-junction?

Topography. Is lot flat or sloped? Avoid yards that slope
down toward the rear. Select home with rise at the rear.

Landscape. Is there a tree or pole directly in front of the
front door? Dead trees or shrubs? Dead lawn?

Garage. Is it ahead of the house or front door?

Neighbors. Is this house smaller than houses on either side?
Do neighbors' houses have sharp angles pointing at this house?

Views & proximity. Can you see or is it close to church,
temple or other house of worship? Can you see or is it close to
funeral home, cemetery, hospital, police station, sewage treatment,
abandoned building or run-down house?

Water. Is water, lake, river, ocean at the back of house or
too close to front?

Lot. Regular or irregular-shaped? House sits too close to the
front of lot?

Paths. Driveway ends at house instead of garage? Walkways
end straight at door?

Interior

Style. Split or bi-level or center hall colonial?

Front. Front door lines up with back door? Does front door
face stairway?

Structure. Overhead or exposed beams? Ceilings too high or
are they low and slanted? Skylights over sleeping areas or kitchen?
Foundation cracks or problems? Serious plumbing or electrical
problems?

Entrance. See toilet/bathroom door from the entrance? See
the kitchen/stove from the front door? See the dining room from the
front door? See the bedroom from front door?

Toilets. Located in NW, SW, center, or corners of the house?
Bedroom, dining area or kitchen located under or over toilet?

Staircases. Spiral staircase? Staircase interrupted with
landings? Staircase stops at front door? Split or scissor-style
staircase?

Hallways. Too long? Divide the house into two sections? Too
dark?

Subjective Considerations

Appeal. Does this house appeal to you? Do you like it? How
does it "feel" to you?

Signs. Do children misbehave or cry in the house? Children
are more sensitive to negative energy before we are. Is there a nice
breeze? Are birds chirping outdoors?

First sight. What do you see first upon entering home from
back and rear doors that will most likely be used to enter the house
after returning home? First sight should be pleasant. First sight
from entry doors should not be bathroom, laundry, or kitchen.

Make your home attractive. If you enjoy looking at decorating
magazines with beautiful interiors, or enjoy being in beautiful
spaces, then try decorating your space so that it is appealing to you.
Beautiful spaces are always more enjoyable to be in than those that
aren't.

3.Audibly soothing.

Get a tabletop fountain. Place this in a central place in the home.
The gurgling sound of water is extremely relaxing and enjoyable. More
importantly, it creates a "natural" sound like that heard in nature.

Listen to calming music. Classical or new age music is very soothing.
Listen to this when you come home, while relaxing in the house, or
before bed. Or, play it on a whole house stereo system. A new age
group called 2002 makes some especially peaceful, comforting music.
The "River of Stars" and "Land of Forever" are two particularly
beautiful and soothing albums.

Turn off the TV. Again, the TV reigns supreme on the stress meter in a
home. It just keeps yapping, like an unruly electronic dog. And,
it's always there. Learn to savor silence by turning it off unless
you are going to watch it. Enjoy reading, conversing, etc., without
the TV on in the background. TV, in and of itself, is not bad. But
anything that dominates a house, like so many TVs do, is not a good
idea.

4.Make it truly restful.

Place emphasis on the bedroom. Bedrooms are an especially important
part of creating a restful home. Too many bedrooms are
over-functional and over stimulating. They may have a computer,
exercise equipment, desks, stacks of books, etc. to divert attention
from what should really be going on in the room: rest and relaxation
or romance.

Bedrooms designated for rest, relaxation, and romance are they are the
ones that refresh and rejuvenate the best. Although many people think
of the entire home as a "cocoon" away from the whole world, the
bedroom should truly be the cocoon. Creating a tranquil space is key
for being able to fully rest. What's more, these spaces are also more
romantically inspiring.

•Select restful, earthy colors in the bedroom.

•Eliminate work objects, such as computers, work-related materials,
and exercise equipment.

•Take mirrors off the wall if they reflect the bed. Mirrors are
stimulating according to feng shui and should not be in the bedroom.

•Take the TV out of the bedroom. The TV is similar to a mirror, and
it also symbolically "divides" a couple.

•Use textures such as chenille, satin, or silk in the bedroom to give
tactile comfort.

5.Incorporate natural elements.

Asian decorating is often associated with a calm environment. In
particular, Japanese homes are seen as especially serene. This is
because they rely on a heavy use of natural elements. Wood, stone,
and plants are all excellent examples of elements to incorporate in
your space. Using these elements liberally creates a relaxing,
natural and harmonious atmosphere, effectively bringing the outside
in. Plants in baskets or ceramic pots are wonderful additions. Wood
or bamboo baskets add the wood element. Stones and iron gardening
objects also bring some of the outdoors in.

6.Keep it clean.

Cleanliness is important. Unfortunately, most cleaning is done is a
large spurt of time on a Saturday (if at all) and can take several
hours. It is better to keep cleaning items in a bucket or basket
close to the location (such as a bathroom), and take one minute each
day to wipe off counters, or run a brush through the toilet. Think
how relaxing it is to come home to a clean house -- every day. If
possible, hire cleaning help. Clean homes are relaxing homes.

Harmonize Your Yard:

10 Ways to Add Feng Shui Outdoors

If you'd like to energize your yard with feng shui, you'll be happy to
know it's as easy as incorporating feng shui in your home. Even in
the winter, it's still nice to have a yard that brings you pleasure
and happiness. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Enhancing Your Landscape with Feng Shui

1.Look for dead plants and flowers. If you have dead trees or plants,
this portion of your life has dead energy. Removing these dead plants
can impact your life right away. This is especially helpful in the
winter when plants die back. Remove frost-bitten and dead plants
right away – especially if they are in the east, the direction
associated with good health.

2. What shape is your lot? If your lot is irregular, a portion
of your life could be impacted by the missing piece. What to do?
Install a bright light by the missing area to help this area. You can
also try placing a gazing ball here. These work like a mirror and
"expand" the missing area.

3. Try a water feature to help your career or income. If so, put
it in the north portion or the SE sector of your lot or yard. Having
water in the front (if this is in the north sector of your lot) is
especially helpful if it is placed by the front door (on the left as
you look out) and appears to flow toward the house. Consider a
full-blown koi pond. These delightful creatures make great pets and
the add wonderful feng shui. Lillian Too actually has a koi fountain
bubbling inside her home!

4. Fire up your south sector of fame and recognition with a
fireplace or barbecue area. These types of additions are especially
popular these days. A wonderful place to add these is in the south
sector of the lot. If this is in your backyard, all the better. If
it is in the front yard, then add your "fire" element in the form of
lighting. Add landscape lighting to trees or walkways, or perhaps you
might want to install a lamp post here.

5. Add a touch of Asia to your garden. Another popular design
element in the garden nowadays is Asian design. Add Asian flavor by
planting a clump of bamboo in the east sector of your garden or plot.
Or, if you have a northeast or SW area of your yard that needs
attention, add an attractive Zen garden made of raked gravel with some
strategically placed boulders. There are some wonderful books
available about how to make these types of gardens.

6. Give your garden some weight. Adding boulders is a wonderful
addition to any garden or landscape. Boulders are especially
attractive -- and effective -- in the SW and NE. In the SW, a
collection of nine boulders is thought to be beneficial for the woman
of the house. In the NE, they impart energy for educational and
spiritual pursuits. A collection of boulders with one boulder for
each resident of the house is also another nice touch.

7. Bring movement to your yard or garden. Every home needs a
heartbeat and that's why I recommend pendulum clocks in the center of
every home. Likewise, every yard needs movement, too. Place a
windmill or other spinning or twirling object to your yard. Place it
in the area where you want more energy, such as in your career area.
This is an excellent place to put a windmill. Because they symbolize
water, and because they are made of metal, they go perfectly in this
corner of the yard.

8. Add some sound to your outdoors. Don't know where to hang
your windchimes? If you have wooden or bamboo chimes, place these in
the east. If you have metal chimes, place these in the west, NW, or
North corner of the yard. An old school bell is excellent in the NW!
If you have one these wonderful things, be sure to put it up right
away for good news from helpful people!

9. Put a touch of gold into your outdoors. Select shrubs and
plants with gold accents or flowers to plant near the center of the
yard or in the north (career), NE (education) or SW (relationships).
Gold is a very auspicious color and can benefit both you and your yard
with its addition!

10. Get your plants under control. Plants and trees that are too
close to the house appear to smother it. Plants that are too close to
the house and are growing over windows and up walls drain the energy
of a house, not to mention block out light. Don't you always
associate houses overgrown with shrubs and bushes as being "dead"?
Take a look around and see if your plants need to be trimmed, moved,
or removed completely.

And take an extra hard look at trees growing too close to a house.
These should be trimmed back or removed, if needed. A simple trimming
of the trees and shrubs around a house can bring back a flow of energy
around the outside of a home, not to mention making it look neater and
more attractive.
