US professor wants to represent Iran
Fri, 09 May 2008 14:46:40

Francis Boyle, professor of law at the University of Illinois
A leading American professor of international law has voiced readiness to
represent Iran in an international court on Israeli crimes.

"I am ready to represent Iran in an international tribunal for trying the
Zionist regime on charges of genocide of Palestinians and the blockade in
the Gaza Strip," Francis Boyle, professor of law at the University of
Illinois, told Fars News Agency.

According to the news agency, Boyle demanded his proposal to be submitted to
the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Professor Boyle accuses Israel of committing 'Nuremberg offenses' against
the Palestinians.

Boyle has recently been calling for the impeachment of US President George
W. Bush.

Boyle is author of Palestine, Palestinians and International Law, The
Criminality of Nuclear Deterrence, Defending Civil Resistance Under
International Law, The Future of International Law and American Foreign
Policy, Foundations of World Order: The Legalist Approach to International
Relations 1898-1921, and The Bosnian People Charge Genocide.

Boyle on Wikipedia

Francis Anthony Boyle (born 1950) is a professor of international law at the
University of Illinois College of Law. He is a graduate of the University of
Chicago and Harvard Law School. He also received a Ph. D. in political
science from Harvard University.

Between 1988 and 1992 Boyle was a member of the board of Amnesty
International USA. Boyle also charged that Amnesty's staff had been
infiltrated by US and UK security services (see Covert Action interview
below) a claim hotly disputed by many in the human-rights community.

From 1991 to 1993, Boyle was a legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation
Organization. Boyle is currently a member of the Nobel Peace Prize for
Governor George H. Ryan Committee.

Professor Boyle has also made controversial comments about the Middle East,
accusing Israel of committing "Nuremberg offenses" against the Palestinians,
an allusion to the actions of Nazi Germany.

The Big Lie
Palestine, Palestinians and International Law

By Francis A. Boyle

I am not Arab. I am not Jewish. I am not Palestinian. I am not Israeli. I am
Irish American. Our People have no proverbial "horse in this race." What
follows is to the best of my immediate recollection:

The Big Lie

Growing up in the United States during the late 1950s and early 1960s while
strongly supporting the just struggle of African Americans for civil rights,
I was brainwashed at school as well as by the mainstream news media and
popular culture to be just as pro-Israel as everyone else in America. Then
came the 1967 Middle East War. At that time, my assessment of the situation
was that Israel had attacked these Arab countries first, stolen their lands,
and then driven out their respective peoples from their homes. I then
realized that everything I had been told about Israel was "The Big Lie."
Israel was Goliath, not David.

I resolved to study the Middle East in more detail in order to figure out
what the Truth really was.

Of course by then I had already figured out that everything I was being told
about the Vietnam War also constituted The Big Lie. The same was true for
U.S. military intervention into Latin America after the Johnson
administrations gratuitous invasion of the Dominican Republic. The same for
the pie-in-the-sky "Camelot" peddled by the Kennedy administration after the
Bay of Pigs invasion/fiasco and its self-induced Cuban Missile Crisis that
was a near-miss for nuclear Armageddon. So I just added the Middle East to
the list of international subjects that I needed to pay more attention to in
my life.

Chicago

... By the end of Professor Binders course in the Winter of 1970, I had
become convinced of three basic propositions: (1) that the world had
inflicted a terrible injustice upon the Palestinian People in 1947-1948; (2)
that there will be no peace in the Middle East until this injustice was
somehow rectified; and (3) that the Palestinian People were entitled to an
independent nation state of their own. I have publicly maintained these
positions for the past three decades at great cost to myself.

In particular, I have been accused of being everything but a child molester
because of my public support for the Palestinian People. I have seen every
known principle of Academic Integrity and Academic Freedom violated in order
to suppress the basic rights of the Palestinian People. In fact, there is no
such thing as Academic Integrity and Academic Freedom in the United States
of America when it comes to asserting the rights of the Palestinian People
under international law.

... By comparison, Harvards Center for Middle East Studies was then
basically operating as a front organization for the . and probably the
Mossad as well. No point anyone wasting their time studying Middle East
Politics at Harvard.

Nevertheless, I entered Harvard in September of 1971 in order to pursue a
J.D. at the Harvard Law School and a . in Political Science at the Harvard
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Department of Government. The latter
was the same doctoral program that had produced Henry Kissinger, Zbigniew
Brzezinski, Samuel Huntington, and numerous other Machiavellian war-mongers
trained by Harvard to "manage" the U.S. global empire. In other words,
Harvard trained me to be one of these American Imperial Managers: "There but
for the Grace of God go I!"

For the next seven years at Harvard I was quite vocal in my support for the
Palestinian People, including and especially their basic human rights, their
right to self-determination, and their right to an independent nation state
of their own. ...

While in residence as an Associate at the Harvard Center for International
Affairs (CFIA) from 1976-1978, I also came into contact with Walid Khalidi.
I was present for the dramatic off-the-record confrontation between him and
Shimon Peres at the standing CFIA Seminar on "American Foreign Policy" then
conducted by Stanley Hoffmann at their old headquarters on 6 Divinity
Avenue. Peres refused to budge even one inch no matter how flexible Khalidi
was. A harbinger for the Middle East Peace Negotiations over a decade later.

As a most loyal and grateful Harvard alumnus (J.D. magna cum laude, A.M.,
Ph.D.), I must nevertheless state that it is shameful and shameless that
Harvard never granted a tenured full professorship to Walid Khalidi because
he is a Palestinian despite the fact that he is universally recognized as
one of the worlds foremost experts on the Middle East. This gets back to my
previous observation that there is no point studying Middle East Politics at
Harvard. ...

" War dead cremated at facility for pets
AFP
Saturday, May 10, 2008 20:49 IST

But official have said there have been no instances that human and pet
remains were mixed

WASHINGTON: US Defence Secretary Robert Gates ordered a review of the
handling of the remains of US war dead and apologised after learning that
some were cremated in a commercial facility that also cremates pets, the
Pentagon said.

Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said there was no evidence that any
US servicemember was cremated in an incinerator used for pets.

But Gates believed that the use of a commercial facility that cremated both
humans and pets, albeit in separate incinerators, was "insensitive and
entirely inappropriate for the dignified treatment of our fallen," Morrell
said. "The families of the fallen have the secretary's deepest apology," he
added.

An unidentified army officer complained earlier Friday after visiting the
military's mortuary at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to pay respects to a
comrade who had been killed in combat, officials said. He discovered that
the soldier was to be cremated at a facility off the base that had a sign
outside saying it was a pet crematorium, they said.

The officer sent out an email with photographs of the facility that prompted
Gates' action, a senior army officer said.

The facility, owned by the Torbit's Funeral Home Crematory, had been
contracted by the air force to cremate remains of soldiers brought back from
Iraq and Afghanistan through Dover, officials said. Morrell said the
cremations were performed at a separate site that had two incinerators for
human remains and one for pet remains.

"We have absolutely no evidence whatsoever at this point that any human
remains were at all ever mistreated, were ever not cremated where they were
supposed to be cremated," Morrell said. "That said, the secretary believes
that it is inappropriate, to cremate our fallen, our heroes in a facility
that also cremates pets," he said.

The air force halted the use of the crematorium and directed that only
facilities co-located with funeral homes be used in the future, and that
there be a military presence at the facilities, Morrell said. Gates also
ordered David Chu, undersecretary of defence for personnel, to conduct a
review of the handling and cremation of remains of US military personnel.

May 12, 2008

The Palestinian Prisoners' Support and Human Rights Centre ADDAMEER,
declared that the Israeli Zionist forces have arrested almost 6200
Palestinians since the last Intifada started in September of 2000. 350 of
those languishing in prison are children who, against international
conventions, are still imprisoned in Israeli jails and detention centers.

Those youngsters undergo severe punishment and mental stress, living an
extremely horrifying health and mental situation. Being subjected to
torture, interrogation, beatings, humiliation, insults, degradation, and
regular terrorizing, "such conditions will affect their mental well being
forever, and will accompany them through their adult life," the report said.

The report published by the Palestinian centre on Friday 9 May 2008 revealed
that hundreds of children were arrested while they were quite young, and
detained in prisons. Some of them are now over 18 and still are imprisoned.

The Zionist occupation is enforcing military rule in those prisons, thus
they consider a Palestinian child of 16 as an adult. They are willingly
depriving them of their rights as children according to International
agreements. According to international law, minors should be protected
whilst detained.

350 prisoners are females, 20 are young Palestinian girls. Some children
were born inside the Israeli prisons, and they are experiencing health
problems. Mothers experience extremely difficult mental depression being
subjected to humiliation, having to give birth while being chained by the
wrists and feet. Such inhumane treatment is a clear breach of human rights.

Newborn babies are still in Israeli prisons, an example is 3-month-old Yosif
Alziq, the child of the prisoner Fatima Alziq from the Shujayyeah
neighborhood in Gaza. Another example is Noor, the child borne to the
prisoner Manal Ghanem from Tolkarem camp; she was imprisoned while she was
pregnant, and gave birth inside the prison in an extremely difficult
situation.

The prisoner Khawla Zitawi also gave birth to her little girl Ghada inside
the Israeli prison, and they are still imprisoned.

The freed prisoner Samar Subaih has delivered her son Bara'a inside the
prison while her hands and feet were chained. Mervat Taha is another
Palestinian mother who gave birth to her son Wael inside the prison.

The children are kept in an overcrowded place that is unsuitable for human
living. Their needs are not provided for. The rights of imprisoned children
are breached by Israeli forces according to all laws and international
agreements for that matter, especially breast fed babies and toddlers.

Children prisoners are subjected to torture and investigations
The young Palestinian children are subjected to torture and investigations
inside Zionist jails like Ofer, Megiddo, Etzion, the Negev, Jalama, Petah
Tikva, and Ashkelon.

The children inside the prisons are not safe, as this torture is both
physical and psychological. Their living circumstances are difficult and
they cannot grow in serenity, as the frustration they experience is
constant. The cells where they are kept are less than 1 meter x 1.5 meters in
dimensions. Chained by their hands and feet and blindfolded, they are not
provided with mattresses or covers. Living in the darkness, they are
deprived of sunlight. The children suffer the humidity and lack of
ventilation, except for a small hole used to provide them through it with
small quantities of food.

Torturing children
The interrogation of children begins after 3 days of detention. Upon the 3rd
day, the child is deprived of all human necessities, besides being subjected
to lengthy, successive, repeated sessions of interrogations. At such times
the child is deprived of his right to sleep and is prohibited from using the
toilet for long periods.

The study reveals that the children complained that they were subjected to
pressures and negotiations to offer them relief in return of their
cooperation and becoming their spies. Some children confessed they have
already given in and just done that. They were told if they would not
cooperate and become their spy, they would remain in prison forever.

Palestinian children in Israeli prisons in numbers
105 are younger than 15
322 are from the West Bank
22 are from Jerusalem
6 are from Gaza
156 have been convicted
187 are waiting for a trial
7 are under 'administrative detention' - contradicting all laws and
international agreements.
80 are very sick and are in need of medical treatment
Beatings, intimidation and organized terrorism against Palestinian children
The imprisoned Palestinian children have suffered greatly from beatings
during arrests and investigations. Most children have been arrested from
their homes in the middle of the night. The armed forces of the Zionist
occupation use terrorist methods such as police dogs and other terrorizing
methods are used to raise the children's fear and cause their parents to
panic, not to mention the huge number of insults received by the child
during the arrest.

The children are blindfolded during the arrests, their hands and feet are
tied. And according to testimonies of detained children themselves, they
were also kicked, slapped on their faces, beaten repeatedly by soldiers, and
sometimes hit by the soldiers' rifles while being pushed inside the military
cars.

Terrorizing the children during investigation is a breach of their human
rights. The parents reported that their children were handcuffed, crouching
down in the cold for many hours waiting to be interrogated, thus weakening
their morale. Sometimes they are kept in solitary confinement to put the
child under mental pressure. Children were beaten up at different stages of
interrogation, slapped on their faces by the interrogator, deprived of food
and drink for periods of 12 hours. The guards were swearing at them, cursing
them, and preventing them from using the toilet, or from changing their
clothes for days.
Some children were terrorized by being threatened to be sexually attacked
and some were touched in an inappropriate way. Such acts are a direct insult
and clear harm to their innocence. Some physicians said that some of those
children will never recover from what they have been subjected to.
Especially some of them witnessed the beatings of their family members, and
others witnessed the humiliation of their parents in their own homes by the
soldiers.
