Thousands Rescued in 2007 from Slavery in Brazil

Havana, Dec 19 (acn) Some 5,000 people living under conditions "similar
to slavery" were rescued this year, reported the Brazilian government,
which has sets out to put an end to this scourge.

According to international media outlets, more than 5,000 farm workers
subjected to nearly poverty conditions were rescued from Brazilian
haciendas in 2007, making this one of the most successful years in this
struggle.

"Slavery is still a reality in some regions of our country but this
government has set it as a priority to eradicate the problem," said a
spokesperson from the President's human rights office of Brazil, as
quoted by Granma newspaper.

"There's much to do and there are still places where employers who
exploit their workers continue to enjoy impunity," he added.

Since 1995, more than 25,000 workers living as virtual slaves were
rescued by the government.

Human Rights Secretary Paulo Vanucci announced Tuesday at a meeting of
the National Commission for the Eradication of Slave Labor (CONATRAE)
that in 2008 the struggle will be strengthened, coinciding with the
60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

CONATRAE coordinates the tasks of the different entities involved in
the effort including the Ministry of Labor and the Federal Police.

A representative of the mobile inspection group on slave labor
explained that "as soon as a worker is rescued they are included in a
register and receive compensation for moral damages."

"Being a slave worker means not receiving a salary, working under
inhumane conditions and often not being able to leave the hacienda
without permission from the boss," explained the human rights office
spokesperson.
