ARTIST ED DRAHANCHUK
The Windsor Public Library (on Ouellette Ave.) contains,
on the main floor, a 31 by 9 foot "Fossil Forms: a mural in
stoneware clay" by Ed Drahanchuk. The Windsor Viter decided
to find out more about the artist. First we discovered the
web page of Ed and Ethel Drahanchuk.

From the web page and from information Ed sent to us via
e-mail, we present the following synopsis.
Ed Drahanchuk was born in 1938. He is of Ukrainian
ancestry. His grandparents came to Alberta in the early
1900's. His mother's maiden name is Billy. She was raised in
the Smoky Lake area of Alberta.
Ed graduated from the Alberta College of Art in 1963 and
set up his own art studio, where he specialized in ceramics.
He has participated in ninety government and gallery
exhibitions, in fifteen countries. Many of his pieces were
purchased for Canadian embassies.
In 1969, he moved into a specially designed 5600 square
foot studio/residence. This building won an award as one of
Canada's best designed buildings for the decade 1960-70.
In 1975, Ed and his wife Ethel, also an artist, moved and
set up a new studio on Quadra Island, B.C. which is a
fifteen minute ferry ride from Campbell River on Vancouver
Island. Ethel specializes in soapstone sculptures bronzes,
and pottery.
In 1983, Ed began specializing in painting as well as
ceramics. His murals can be found in the Hudson Bay Oil and
Gas Building (Calgary), Alberta House (London, UK), Royal
Bank of Canada (Calgary), Mercantile Bank (Vancouver), and
many other locations.
A few of the many awards of this successful artist are
Canada Council Grant, "Best Group by one potter" (Canadian
Ceramics Show), "Best stoneware, best design" (Canadian
Ceramics 65), Allied Arts Medal (Royal Architectural Inst.
of Canada), Achievement Award - Excellence in Art
(Government of Alberta), Design of Excellence Awards (Design
Canada).
Regarding his nature paintings, art critic says they are
"radiant. ... Ed Drahanchuk's paintings are striking from
across the room and intriguing close up."
Ed Drahanchuk is [one of] the most successful artists of
Ukrainian ancestry in Canada. He is somewhat known in the
Ukrainian Canadian community. Articles about him have
appeared in Novy Shliakh (e.g. Aug. 21/65, Sept. 25/65).
However, he deserves to be even better known in our
commmunity.

The following poem is taken from Peter Kuzyk's 1998 book of
poetry, Garden of Verse, Book 4.
ON HER REQUEST
Would you? She asked, and I said yes.
It was a sweet yet wistful voice,
Nor was it that she was a blonde,
That prompted me to make this choice.
There was another reason why
I said yes to her request.
Nor her blue eyes, nor slender waist,
Nor that she was so lightly dressed.
Nor had we ever met before...
It was a first here at the mall;
Yes first, and what a breathless thing
When she approached me with her call!
And I could tell that she had shopped,
For she was laden down with things;
A hat a shoe box, shopping bags ...
Gold bracelet and intriguing rings!
I made haste now at her request,
With pity for all that she bore
And brought into effect her wish
I held open the exit door.
