On July 20, Bob Panasik of Windsor won the summer
championship of the Ontario Professional Golf Association in
a playoff at Ingersoll, Ontario. On July 11, he won the CPGA
(Canadian Professional Golf Association) Seniors
championship by four strokes. On July 2. Mary Caton, sports
columnist with The Windsor Star, wrote an article on Windsor
golfer Bob Panasik (page F5). The article suggests that he
clearly merits being inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of
Fame. Both Bob Panasik and his father Nick Panasiuk (note
difference in spelling) are members of the Windsor/Essex
Sport Hall of Fame. Paintings of the Windsor/Essex Hall-of-
Famers are on display in the Devonshire Mall in Windsor.
Mehron Halitsky of Windsor graduated from Ryerson
Polytechnic University (Toronto) in June majoring in Theatre-Acting.
According to The Art Gallery of Windsor 1997 Annual Report,
Dr. Charles Wrock donated numerous art works to the Gallery,
including 15 drawings of Ed Zelenak of West Lome, Ontario.
From March 22-May 3, 1998, Mr. Zelenak was one of three
invited exhibitors at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art
in Chicago. Three of Zelenak's drawings can be seen on p. 6
of the Annual Report.
The Windsor Star (July 3, page D4) reports that the Windsor
Spitfire Hockey Team drafted Ukrainian centre Pavlo Shtefan,
as the 41st pick overall, in the Ontario Hockey Association.
Pavlo is 18 years old. There may be some difficulty in
Pavlo's getting the right to play, since he has contractual
obligations to Torpedo Yaroslavl in Russia. Last year, Pavlo
played Junior B hockey in Cambridge, Ontario.
Eugene Barna is the author of the Letter of the Day in The
Windsor Star, July 2. He is the "allotment officer for Camp
Henry" and the letter concerns the closing of the camp by
Parks Canada due to high levels of DDT. It seems that it is
well known that eating DDT laden food is dangerous, but
there is no indication that camping or walking on grounds
with higher levels of DDT poses any danger. Eugene was also
interviewed on CBC radio on the same issue. Back in the
1970's Eugene Barna was the host of a Windsor area Ukrainian
radio program.
Irene Price (Pylypiw) of Amherstburg has retired after a
long career in the Essex County school system.
Amanda Iwasiw of Windsor received her B.A. in History from
McGill University and will begin studies in Law at the
University of Windsor beginning in September.
The magazine Windsor Life (June/July, 1998) has an article
about Windsor's MUSIC EXPRESS, and its music director Ernie
Gerenda. Ernie's Ukrainian background was discussed in the
February, 1998 issue of The Windsor Viter.
The play "Lady Day" about the life of singer Billy Holiday
reopened in June at the Capitol Theatre after a successful
run in 1997. Billy Holliday was played by Leslie McCurdy
with Chris Borshuk in the roll of the piano player.
Windsor's Anna Huk continues to garner good media coverage
for her new World of AromaTherapy business. The new Windsor
publication FIT (June, 1998), which deals with health and
fitness, had a feature article on Anna's business (pp. 6-7).
The L.A. Echo (LaSalle) (June 9) also had an article on Anna
Huk's business (page 16). Call 250-0132 for an appointment.
Anna gives therapeutic massages using aromatic oils. A one
hour session costs $40. and includes a facial.
Windsor crown prosecutor Randy Semeniuk was interviewed as
part of an article on "Shaken Baby Syndrome," in The Windsor
Star (June 6). Semeniuk has prosecuted such cases and has
taken a proactive approach by publicizing the issue, and
asking all hospital staff to be on the lookout for such
babies.
On the weekend of June 5, portrait artist Myrtle Kereliuk
had a booth at the Lasalle Strawberry Festival and Orysia
Horton displayed her art at Windsor's Art in the Park.
The front cover of the 1998/99 Windsor Visitor Guide
includes a female Ukrainian Dancer among its pictures. Does
anyone know who she is?
For a time, Obolon Beer (from Ukraine) was missing from the
shelf of the LCBO store in the Roundhouse Mall in Windsor.
It's now back, nicely displayed. Perlova Vodka (from
Ukraine) continues to be sold at the same location.
