PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
(Marie Boyer)

What is going to happen when we lose this link (The
Windsor Viter) of information to our Ukrainian Canadian
community and federation across Canada? We send a message of
positive reinforcement of our roots - Ukrainian and Canadian
- to all nationalities, that we exist as a recognizable
social, cultural and religious entity in our city.
Where are the individuals with that pride of heritage to
continue the "Viter?" The editors have given us eight years
of information that has enriched our knowledge of fellow
Ukrainians across Canada (and Europe). Where is YOUR
commitment?
Find a team or go it alone. But, please, let's hear from
you! We are counting down the issues. We need you. The
Windsor Viter - will it vanish in the wind or blow stronger?

LOCAL

On October 1, University of Windsor Geography professor Dr.
Ihor Stebelsky gave a presentation on "Ukrainians in
Windsor" at the Duff-Baby House. The talk was open to the
general public. Dr. Stebelsky is a co-editor of the book
"Ukrainians in Windsor and Essex County,"(1995) published by
the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (Windsor).

On Sept. 27, there was a concert by singers Viktor and
Lyubov from Ukraine, at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian
Catholic Church hall.

The first day of 1998 Ukrainian language (ridna shkola)
classes in Windsor was Sept. 26. The classes are held each
Saturday at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Church rectory. Anna
Petrichyn, who is in charge of the classes, encourages
parents to sign up their children. It is NOT too late. The
Ukrainian school also requests financial donations to help
to purchase school supplies. Please be generous.

The first day of 1998 dance classes for Windsor's Barvinok
Ukrainian Dance School was Sept. 20.

The Ukrainian Women's Organization of Windsor held its
annual Scholarship Presentation Sept. 20. Awards were
presented by Mary Zolna and Luba Kosak. Recipients of the
Fred and Mary Kirachuk Memorial Scholarships were Sebastien
Dzwonczyk and Lindsey Kohuch. Recipients of the Ukrainian
Women's Organization Scholarships were Diane Kehoe and Luba
Kielbasa (donation from the Ukrainian Canadian Business and
Professional Association of Windsor) and Joanna Horbal
(donated by the Ukrainian Credit Union). The guest speaker
was V. Rev. Eugene Halitsky. There was an exhibit and sale
of oil paintings by well-known local artist Orysia Horton.

It's apple picking season. This year has yielded a bumper
crop in Essex County. If you want to pick your own apples,
try DERKACH Farms, another successful Ukrainian Canadian
business. The Farm is located west of Ruthven, on old
Highway 3. Exit left on Upcott Side Rd. Follow the Happy
Apple signs. Open daily 9am - 5 pm.
