Berlin threatens punishment of Allied prisoners of war in
retaliation for the Soviet war-crimes trials in Kharkov.

Following further exchanges between Washington and London on
the question of issuing an export license to the World
Jewish Congress for rescue efforts, the American minister in
Bern reports that he has personally delivered the license
authorizing the transfer of an initial $25,000 in hard
currency. (See February 13, April 20, June 15, July 16,

Two Ukrainian peasants, Hermann and Emma Kurras, are
executed after a trial for hiding thirteen Jews who had
escaped from a concentration camp. (USHMM, 1994, p. 70)
