Ibrahim Demirel was born in Malatya’s Körsüleymanli township in 1941. He
graduated from the Teachers' Training School in Akçadag province, the
Painting Workshop of the Teachers' Training School in Çapa and the Academy
of Applied Fine Arts (Marmara University). Later, he chose art as a
career. He then worked as a graphics designer and a photographer for
various companies. In 1975, Demirel established the "Umut Poster
Publications and Design Workshop". His first photography album was
published by the Dutch government in 1979. He published a book entitled
"Photograph" in 1981, and in 1982 he opened the "Sanatyapim Plastic Arts
Workshop and Gallery", which is one of the leading art centers in Ankara.
One of Ibrahim Demirel's aims is to further develop the workshop by the
addition of a school and museum for future generations. In 1995, Demirel
published four of his portfolios. He is one of the few art collectors in
Turkey and has an important collection of oil paintings as well as a
collection of ethnographical and historical artifacts. He has been
constantly contributing to the promotion of Turkish culture by
establishing new projects in photography, by teaching and collecting art
objects. He is also an art consultant.
Ibrahim Demirel, who received numerous awards in Turkey and abroad such as
China, former Yugoslavia and Italy for his graphic designs and
photography, is a member of the teaching staff at Gazi University's School
of Communications. He also presents slide shows, exhibitions and seminars,
produces radio and TV programs and publishes books on art. He is a member
of the PTFD (Association of Professional Advertisement Photographers) and
honorary member of AFSAD (Association of Amateur Photographers) and the
Explorers Club.
Ibrahim Demirel has compiled his photographs into albums entitled 'Isiga
Merhaba' (Hello to the Light), Ben Anadolu'yum (I am Anatolia), Göçerler
(Nomads) and Orada Insanlarimiz Var Uzakta (There are Turks living far
away).
WHAT IS ESSENTIAL IS ART (Whether it is made with a brush or with a lens)
Each branch of art necessitates the use of different implements. You write
a poem with words, you chisel stone, you cast bronze and you sculpt a
statue. You make ceramics with clay, a painting with paint and a
photopraph with a lens. What is important is the product created, not the
implement used. What is important are the values that make the statue a
statue, the poem a poem, the photograph a photograph and the painting and
a painting.
The process of production is as important as the implements. An artist can
experiment for months with a painting, he draws, paints, destroys and
starts all over again. A sculptor can work with his hammer and chisel for
months to create a statue from within the marble.
When the production process of a photograph is compared to that of
painting or sculpture, it appears to one as though it is produced with
less effort. Is it really so? Certainly not. We can see much more
concretely that it is not so when we look at Ibrahim Demirel’s
photographs. Ibrahim Demirel looks at nature from the viewfinder,
determines the frame, adjusts the angle and light, with years of
experience. He freezes the moment and place by pushing the shutter
release. The images that are being framed and fixed with Ibrahim Demirel’s
eyes illuminate the uncertainty in minds of whether or not photography is
an art, which is debated in Turkey. Ibrahim Demirel evaluates the
photogtraph as a photograph and perfects it in its own course, without
entering into a contest with paintings and without forcing the limits of
the photograph with his interventions. A tree, a field, people and all of
nature that all of us see, when used in the frames determined by Ibrahim
Demirel, are no longer documents, but have become works of art. We can
also feel the pleasure and excitement in these photographs as we feel
about a high quality work of art. Ibrahim Demirel caresses our aesthetic
emotions with his photopraphs, forces us to think and opens new vistas for
us. When doing this, he searches and finds the hidden beauties in the
essence of nature. He determines them with great mastery and presents them
to us as works of art.
Ibrahim Demirel’s photographs of nature have deeply influenced me as a
painter. I believe that all my colleagues will be influenced in the same
manner.
