The Verdher Trio
An acknowledged leader in the field of new music, the Verdehr Trio for
over thirty years has concentrated on molding and defining the personality
of the violin-clarinet-piano trio. The Trio has over the years created a
large repertoire by commissioning over 130 new works from some of the
world's most prominent and exciting composers--known and unknown, young
and old, from this country and abroad. These efforts are entitled The
Making of a Medium because, in a real sense, this is what has happened
over the years. A handful of earlier trios by Bartok, Stravinsky,
Milhaud, Khachaturian, Berg and Ives showed the potential tonal and
musical possibilities of this grouping. To round out its repertoire with
Classical and Romantic works, the Trio has rediscovered as well as
transcribed 18th and 19th century pieces for inclusion in its concert
programs.

A Symposium Saturday,
October 20, 2001
9:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., The Geballe Room,
Townsend Center, 220 Stephens Hall
The symposium takes up the question of land during the Ottoman period and
how it figured in theoretical debates as well as in the lived experience
of ordinary people. It focuses on moments when critical shifts occurred in
various discourses surrounding land-law and imperial ideology, for
example. The symposium also explores the relationships among different
subject groups-non-Muslims, Muslims, foreign residents-around the
geographies of property. Issues of historiography figure in a number of
the presentations. Commenters will bring other regional perspectives to
