Being Nationalistic and Individual in Cyprus
In the last week of June, the European Council Parliamentarians' Assembly
accepted the two reports that accused Turkey [of violations]. One of these
is about the rights of the Greeks and Marunites living in the North side and
the second is, "The migrants coming from Turkey are colonizing the occupied
lands." This second report asserts that because of this migration
population, the structure of TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) has
changed significantly, and because they [the migrants] are easily given
[Cypriot] citizenship, Turkish Cypriots started to leave the Island on a
large scale. In other words, the Council of Europe wasn't just watching out
for the rights of Christians or the Southern people, but also was watching
out for the rights of the Northern Cypriot (native) Turks.
While our official reaction was limited to unproductive objections for the
reports to be obstructed, our 'sensitive' public opinion did not do any
research and pretended not to see this because we don't like to hear such
things. For us, it's not important what the people are going through, but
what is more important is which position to defend for our national
benefits. When you look at the situation from this perspective, the
individual entity loses its meaning and gets melted away in the concepts of
'nation' and 'state.' Real people's wishes, dreams, beliefs, sufferings,
pains and sacrifices, only find meaning in a bigger and besieging
nationalism. But on the other hand, this also states spiritual and national
values constituting a hierarchy within the self... How Turkish Cypriots are
the instrument of Cyprus politics, now the 'child land' is well a part of
the beneficial perspective of the 'mother land.'
However for this perspective to work, the public has to acquire and absorb
this perspective. Even if you obstruct the opposition in the 'mother land'
through the talents of disinformation and manipulations, operation of the
state politics is nevertheless in need of a minimum democracy in the Cypriot
society living through the events on its own. In case the democracy points
are an anti-thesis to the national thesis, an atmosphere is needed to push
the democracy to the sub level of the hierarchy of the national values to
make it [democracy] subordinate. The classic way of doing this is to produce
an external threat...For this reason, for example, Denktas says if Turkish
troops were to be withdrawn [from TRNC] there will be massacre... But the
same Denktas is against the Annan plan, which will legitimize the presence
of Turkish troops in Cyprus.
This is because Denktas's real problem isn't the people who are trying to
live there with their blood and flesh. It is because of the official
mentality based on a subjective imaginary 'national' Turkish Cypriot. This
approach is naturally unable to perceive the opposite side from the concrete
type of people. They also are being seen as the instrument of their own
hierarchy of national values. That is why Denktas thinks that as a rude
sentence like, "If there were a Turkish diffusionist, then Southern Cyprus
would have been Turkish by now,' is an intelligent view. With the same
reason, the pens of the official statement are trying to find the remedy in
a more united and national Turkishness.
Unfortunately the more nationalistic Turkishness becomes, the more Turks are
being lost ...The pressures, blackmails and spiritual surroundings are now
bouncing back... Due to the results of their experiences, the people of
Cyprus have developed a rude but strong criterion...[They] Do not want the
face or the voice of the status quo... There was a news item detailed in
Zaman on November 24, 2002 that introduced us to the Dipkarpaz's Sipahi
village: "........... In front of this neglected mosque there are Turkish
and Cypriot flags side by side, and in front of these there is a sculpture
portrait of Ataturk, which we are used to seeing in front of schools. The
Turks living in the village do not make any comments about the Ataturk bust,
but are contented by saying, 'We did not put it'." Is there anything more to
say?

Congratulations madame
I really love it when some one tries to make conversation by posting a
really long and boring article to as many groups as possible without even
including their own opinions on the matter. What an excellent post!
Absolutely Anthony, she does it at least 50 times EVERY day except at
weekends when she pretends her daddy takes her down to their de-luxe Beach
Hut !
She tries not to comment herself because she can only manage a few words of
extremly poor pigeon English
Her Romanian is much better yet she still spouts racial hatred like the
outrage below

Sure you don't mean Pizza Hut?
*LOL*
If she stopps her insane usenet ramblings and renounces her racism, I've
promised to take her to Lahmacun-hut, a special Turkish version of Pizza Hut
