I know everyone here has a nice new digital camera so I have a question
please. I have the Canon Powershot S230 , 3.2 meg pixels. When I bring the
camera close to my ear and lightly shake it, I hear a little rattle, almost
like a very small spring or screw moving or loose. Still under warranty, I
took back to store, they heard it, sending it in for repair, gave me a S400
for temporary replacement until mine comes back fixed and this temporary
replacement has more rattling going on inside. Still works, doesn't affect
anything else.
Is this normal? Anyone else's digital camera have a rattle like this? THanks

I have a Canon G1. The lens rattles a little when I shake it. This is
normal. When the auto-focus mechanism is activated as soon as you start to
aim and shoot the picture, the focusing gears tighten up and the rattle (or
play in the lens) is not an issue.

I just shook mine. It rattles, just as you described...To me, it sounds like
some slight movement in the battery compartment.

Many cameras and lenses have a slight rattle to them. As long as your
results are good don't worry about it. Often there is some 'play' left
in auto focus lenses, or in auto zooms to allow them to move more
freely. I have several lenses that rattle, some that don't, as well as
several cameras that make noises when I shake them. I've solved the
problem by not shaking them. :o)

Hello!

This sound comes from the sensor which detects if you make a portrait or a
landscape-picture!
I think that every CANON Digicam makes this sound. (also IXUS-Models)

Why don't you belong to the Photographers Businessmen's Club here in Chiang
Mai. Is it because it is for professionals only ?? Photoenvisions com - what
a joke !!

Say Hey !!

Wait until he gets those advertising bills hitting him in the ass. Stevie
must think he is a udda Weegee - fater of photo journalism. He had to pay
for the last article in a local magazine. Same old story of how he pays and
gives gifts to the mountain people so he can take their pictures. Sort of
sets the example for the rest of the ex-pats living here.

Why would a camera care whether you are taking a portrait or landscape
picture?

Do you know why they care? I have a Canon G1 and can't imagine why they
would care, but maybe you can convince me. The lens rattles (before the
auto-focus is activated) on my G1, which is perfectly normal.

Thanks for all the feedback,, I will call the store and retrieve my camera
before they send it back and attempt to fix it, then nothing will work right
after that.

Canon is good in printers and not cameras. Used to own a Powershot too. This
was one of the earlier batches. Can't remember the model number but the
resolution was less than 1 meg pixel. Results were disappointing as most of
the photos taken had a yellow tint to it. Switched to Nikon later. Photos
taken were good but the camera kept developing problems like faulty LCD
etc... Switched to Olympus. No problems so far.

Conclusion is this. Get a digital camera, from a manufacturer, who has
experience in photography.

Is this a joke? Canon has produced very high quality 35mm cameras (and now
digital) for about 45 years, right up there with Nikon (and long before they
made copiers). The Cannon 35mm A1 camera was used by many professionals
(although not as many as the Nikon F series). The current line of Canon 35mm
and digital cameras are considered as top notch or better than any in the
world.

BTW, Canon has sold many more 35mm cameras than any other manufacturer over
the last 40 years.
