Thai army chief: national unity vital to face crises

Special report: Army coup in Thailand

Special report: Crisis in Thailand

BANGKOK, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- General Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, head of
Thailand's Council for National Security (CNS) and also army chief, said here on
Saturday that the military council is preparing to submit three national agendas
to the government for immediate implementation.

The government and CNS share the same idea that problems prevailing in the
country must be resolved as quickly as possible, which is why the agendas will
be submitted to the government, Sonthi was quoted by the Thai News Agency as
saying.

He said their themes are unity among the people, solving corruption and a
reconciliation between the people, as the King will celebrate his 80th birthday
next year.

Unity among the people is a vital factor in the eyes of the military council
and the public should cooperate in order to achieve that goal, he said.

Touching on the government's policy presented Friday by Prime Minister
Surayud Chulanont to members of the National Legislative Assembly, Sonthi
admitted the premier was shouldering a heavy duty and said he realized the
magnitude of the task.

He said the CNS was also aware of the serious nature of the task ahead, "but
we have to (work together to) make the country sail through the crises."

The interim government, installed by the coup-maker-led CNS on Friday
presented its policy platform to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), with
the sufficiency economy as a pivotal principle for running the country in the
one-year term.

The policy platform highlighted the government's outlined administration
plan comprising five key aspects -- political, economic, social, foreign affairs
and security, all of which will be implemented through a "sufficiency approach".

They talk, talk again and do nothing!
In the meantime the economy, the international image of the country,
the political turmoil, the terror in the South, the national unity are
falling to pieces.
Who said here that the situation is far better than under Thaksin?

hmmm..an article about Gen. Sonthi and others seeing a fortune teller, and
some magic to be made.
Yes, fortune tellers have quite a lot of popularity among many Thai, and
Thai leaders including TS have made visits to fortune tellers or in other
ways reference to omens and such.
Whether this is done sincerely from magical beliefs or for political
appearance value, only a psychic like someone who knows from afar what I
know could say. Care to tell which it is, Mystic Mort?

hmmm, the article also notes Sonthi, et al, going to visit military units
and similar matters, and mentions a rumor about TS.

NOWHERE in that article does it show the situation to be worse.
YOU supposedly read Thai papers, and THIS is what you find to support
'situation is worse'?

Care to cut the crap, already?

You are a little lazy, aren't you? The references are in the BKK Post
and the Nation, just look for them.
Perfessor, if you think that the economy has never been in better
shape, that the country is praised by every UN members as *the* model
of progress, that the political situation is absolutely clear, that
the South is at last a paradise on earth and that every khon Thai
supports the junta, it's your problem.
I am afraid that tomorrow you will think that Elvis is still alive and

No but you behave as if you don't read anything about Thai politics;
maybe, you cannot accept the things that don't fit your prejudice?
It's rather disappointing from somebody who said he could 'read
between the lines'.

Censorship, Perfessor, don't forget the media censorship!
Today the military-controlled media talk about fortune teller and bad
luck. A few days ago, they quoted the general saying not to be afraid
by food poisoning, a week ago the journalists screamed that the tanks
rolled back to Bangkok because Thaksin was in Sgpore. Now they see him
to sneak into the country via the northern border...
Your putchists are scared by something, in the same way Thaksin was
before the coup.
Now I understand what TS feared but I don't know about the junta. Of
course, I can imagine it when I remind of ancient Rome or the present
Burma...

Nice try, but as it's *your* claim that many things are worse.
Just looking at financial climate factors over the past fortnight I find at
least 3 major US advisory firms upgrading their ratings for Thai equities
(while one downgrades for SEA at large!), so your idea that the burden is on
ME to prove your claims to the contrary is ridiculous.
Umm, and these investors' stalwarts are NOT being censored by Sonthi ;~p

TYVM.
You purport to 'read between the lines' and offer what?

> (1) Today the military-controlled media talk about fortune teller and bad

Sounds like Thaksin !

>A few days ago, they quoted the general saying not to be afraid by food
>poisoning,

You refer to threats in the South by militants?
You apparently forget that back in July, Sonthi was dismissive of such.
Or were you just reciting the re-hash seen in The Nation of that news?

Look at the lead of the article at etna.mcot:
<q> Army chief calls for calm over rumoured insurgent food poisoning plan
BANGKOK, July 12 (TNA) - Thailand's army chief on Wednesday asked government
forces keeping peace in violence-plagued southern border towns to stay calm
in the face of rumours that insurgents planned to poison food and water
supplies to subvert the effectiveness of military-run community relations
programmes. </q>
http://etna.mcot.net/query.php?nid=23258

Now look at The Nation's FULL text:
<q>Army Commander-in-Chief Wednesday dismissed as rumours reports that
militants in deep South would use poison to try to kill state officials.
Some newspapers have reported quoting sources from the Southern Border
Province Peace-Building Command as warning that the militants would lace
poison in foods and drinks to try to kill government officials.
"They were rumours," Sonthi said. </q>
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/read.php?newsid=30008526

Perhaps the militants' poison was delayed in the mails since July, and
Wednesday's are 'don't worry about poison plot days'? ;~)

--or perhaps, since The Nation's article was so brief, and your memory is
wishful, and YOU are the lazy one (except when it comes to baiting) you
didn't even trouble to go to the article at etna.mcot and read:
<q> He dismissed a report that the Southern Border Provinces Peace-Building
Command had recently warned local officials against the insurgents' plan to
poison their food and water. </q>
Now, the Nation's text:
<q>Some newspapers have reported quoting sources from the Southern Border
Province Peace-Building Command as warning that the militants would lace
poison in foods and drinks to try to kill government officials. </q>

Gosh, could The Nation's writer just be recycling? ;~)
Without providing links, you seem more the baiter than the debater.

> a week ago the journalists screamed that the tanks
> rolled back to Bangkok because Thaksin was in Sgpore. Now they see him
> to sneak into the country via the northern border...

That was a rumor mentioned in the fortune teller article.
You're good at finding rumors.

> Your putchists are scared by something, in the same way Thaksin was

Perhaps scared, or perhaps proactively cautious.

Yes but that proves nothing at all. You perfectly know that the US

No again.
When TS visited a fortune teller, the journalists said he was

Again, you claim to know what I know--and you claim bullshit.

'deeply downgraded just after the coup' is your claim, and I know that?

Thai Coup May Be
A Boon for Stocks

Yesterday's closure of Thailand's stock market almost certainly let it avoid
a hit in the wake of Tuesday night's military coup. Now, with the initial
confusion dispelled, fund managers believe the bloodless coup may prove a
boon for the lackluster market over the long term.

~~Ummm, fund managers believe the coup may prove a boon--a real negative
appraisal, Mort?

Thailand Stands by Markets
Thaksin Is Gone,
But Economic Policies
Remain After Coup
By JAMES HOOKWAY
October 9, 2006; Page A8

BANGKOK, Thailand -- The selection of Pridiyathorn Devakula, the governor of
Thailand's central bank, as finance minister in the country's new
military-installed interim government signals that Bangkok is likely to
continue its free-market, growth-oriented economic policies.

~~Yes, a likelihood to continue free market growth oriented policies, that's
really oh-so worrisome to Western money men, LOL! ;~p

``````````````````````
> So now it's only a correction.
LMAO!
Yeah, like the one advisory firm that last week downgraded SEA at large
while upgrading Thailand was also 'just correcting'--for an earlier
downgrading it never issued:
(I mentioned this fact in my previous post--just to refresh your memory
which is so filled with love for Thaksin that you forget all others--such as
Western fat cats who don't like to be bullshitted when it comes to $$$$$$
INTERNATIONAL TRADER - ASIA
Markets Resist Region's Uncertainty
By RATTAPHOL ONSANIT
<q> UBS, which rates overall emerging Asia Underperform but gives Thailand
an Overweight rating </q>
````````````````````

Mais oui, certainment! 'deeply downgraded just after the coup' and now just
correcting ?
Guess that explains why the Thai stock market dipped less in the days after
the coup than the US markets have dropped on many days these past months,
quite without political upheavals?
.. Actually, as most of the Thai market capitalization is NOT from abroad,
it would need LOCAL investors swapping out shares for cash (or gold!) to
drive it down very much--which OMG might even imply that monied Khon Thai
were not all that worried over TS being routed.
Mon dieu ! ;~)

Anyhow, please keep making things up, Mort.
I'll let you waste somebody else's time for argument (while enjoying the
fictions!) unless or until you start providing references for your claims; I
like you too much to indulge you when you're just spouting arguments without
real basis.

-maxwell
( BTW, that was very 'clever' to speak in vague terms of poisoning plot--you
caught me on that one, then went to a different rumour than the one I'd
addressed. Could have gone the other way, of course, LOL! Good bit of
baiting--salute! )
