Does this newsgroup have any readers in the USSR? If so, can any of them
cast any light on what's going on? (Assuming that they know, and that doing
so wouldn't put them in any material danger....)

Most of the reader in the USSR read news/email via a uucp link from
Finland.

The uucp communication is done via telephones. Since the telephone
system is down/overly busy, it may be nearly immpossible for them to
get through.

With this termoil, everyone is tring to get through so even if the
phone system is working they can't get their lines.
