I've forwarded this inquiry to one of the folklore discussion lists, and
I'll post any responses I receive. I've gotten quite curious about these
creatures, and I'll be interested to see what sort of response I get.

Here's the citation for the book he mentions:

It's called Ink in the Porridge, Urban Legends of the South African
elections (Penguin, 1994), and sells for around R40 (just under $12)
here. It's stocked by most branches of CNA and in all branches of
Exclusive Books. (By the way, it's my third collection of
South African legends - copies are on the way to the folks at Foaftale
News, so they might review it in the near future.)
