"New Painting" at JAG
Moira de Swardt
African Art, originally commissioned by the KwaZulu Natal Society of
Art Gallery, with a grant from the National Lottery Distribution
Trust Fund, which opened at the Johannesburg Art Gallery on 23 July
2006 and which closes on 3 September 2006. It is curated by Storm
Janse van Rensburg.
A full colour brochure at R50 with a lead essay by Virginia MacKenny
will guide one through the exhibition.
Participating artists are Ryan Arenson, Conrad Botes, Jan-Henri
Booyens, Tom Cullberg, Dorothee Kreutzfeldt, Kudzanai Chiurai,
Moshekwa Langa, Mustafa Maluka, Colbert Mashile, Tracy Payne,
Johannes Phokela, Deborah Poynton, Tanya Poole, Temba Shibase &
Dinkies Sithole.
The curator was on duty talking to other visitors, and I couldn't
help but pause to listen for a while. However, my main quest of the
day (the Rembrandt etchings) was at the opposite end of the artistic
spectrum, so I simply wandered quite quickly through the exhibition
enjoying the art and not giving it terribly much thought other than
where the artist has been brought to my attention through other
exhibitions or writings. The overall impression is one of pleasure
at the considerable talent we currently have in South Africa.

Nice works.
The Art Garrely has a huge treasure trove of wonderfull art - old and
new, local and international (Picasso, Bacon, Rodin etc).
It really is a national asset but it is being fucked up by neglect.
The area has already gone to hell and will not soon get better. Gum
sniffers living on the grounds, dangerous park, taxi rank next door,
plus a dirty railway line only topped by the even dirtier streets.
What was done for Newtown should soon be done for the Art Garrely as
well, otherwise it will be a matter of time before bad things happen.

bubblegum do anything for you when sniffed - maybe these 'gum sniffers'
