Just to let you good folks know that I have returned to the States, and will spend Thanksgiving in the bosom of my family down at my sister's house in North Carolina, after I get out of DC. I do expect to post here as well as on fb, so keep top eye open.

I need to mention that I was on a train going to Mumbai (Bombay) recently, and in the compartment with me was an amorous young couple and an older lady, a dried-up prunish dame whose best days went with the Raj. With the young ones, their love was new, and they were just having a good time exploring each other, oblivious to anything and anyone else but themselves and their love; reveling in the fact they were young, and love was new, and the days were endless.

I smiled at them, and glanced over at my fellow seatmate. The old bat had a very disapproving glare on her face. She turns to me and says: "That's so awful. Look at them. Surely they know that there are certain things one should not do in public." Annoyed, I answered, "well, I don't know. It all seems rather innocent; and besides, I've done worse things on trains."

My companion drew herself up in horror, and refused to speak to either of us until we came to the next stop, when she imperiously contacted the conductor and demanded to be removed. And so she was.

Glad to be back, scs!

In the good old days, long departed, some archaic
trains here had compartments isolated from the
rest of its carriage, and access was possible only
when the train was at the station. Therefore
during a longer trip all sorts of nefarious and
unseemly behavior was perpetrated by school kids
of the wanton sort. Or so the rumours went.

We had those as well, up to the early 60s at least. A bugger if you
needed to pee and there were strangers in the compartment.

Leftovers, I roast the bird first. Upside down for an hour then flip it

I keep lard on hand for piecrusts, and I have buttermilk powder.
The dinner rolls are done, and the fancy braided loaf for sandwiches. I
did a lemon/orange/vanilla poundcake, a lemon-curd-filled pastry and a
chocolate-hazelnut one. My d-i-l is doing a salad, my sister's doing the
turkey, I'm not sure what everyone else is contributing.

I didn't cook; I just showed up and ate everyone's food. I have just revived from a turkey coma, and found myself stretched out on the couch, dead to the world, with four little kids on me, also very soundly asleep. As soon as I put them all to bed, I will re-enter my coma. Peace to you all, my fellow scs'ers. Happy Turkey Day!

I've had different versions of it at Chinese joints around here. There's
a large Chinese community here and lots of authentic, regional

is prepared differently everywhere, it's also the "pizza" of Korea.

Generally it's "Hey you" or "It's you again" or "Darn!", but I have been, in the Southern US style, "Jane Margaret" for most of my life; however, the little ones, finding the whole thing rather a mouthful have boiled it down to "Janie M" (as if there were any other "Janes" in the family. My one namesake goes by "Jenny", and the youngest baby--born on my birthday and christened Tiffany Jane--is "TJ"). The littler ones just point, usually. Crocus (whom everyone says is just like me as a younker-I really don't see it yet) will just rush up on me, grab a piece of clothing, or any available attatchment or appendage and try to drag me over to where she wants me to go. Welcome home.

The mix should have the consistency of pancake batter. Add more buttermilk

Pour batter into the hot skillet.
Put skillet in oven and bake for approximately 30-35 minutes.

I'd be surprised if you found a Chinese restaurant that *didn't* make
it, it may not be on the menu though. Just ask for it.

The new family joke is that I have a shadow now; she follows me around almost everywhere I go, but she's a good little soul, and doesn't give me much grief or backtalk, bless her--we tend to get along rather well; she is definitely a high maintenance little soul, and she runs me ragged. She will wake me up by walking into the room and staring at me until I wake up. She has shown me all of her treasures--including her rock garden; it's a circle of rocks (think a flat Stonehenge), that she'll go in the back yard to look at. Sometimes she waters it. (Well, as my sisters say, "Jane Margaret, you do have that cactus as a pet, not a plant"). I hope to get her started reading before I shove off. I am wondering though this isn't God's revenge on me for all the hell I raised as a little one. My poor parents!

In any event, I know you and Crocus will be a tag-team in the future. What
would be the first book you'd introduce her too, Jane Margaret ?

Thanks, Scotty; she is rather special, we think. These days, being your own little person is rather frowned upon; conformity is not my strong suit, either. She is a sweetheart, and we'll see how much like me she actually becomes!

I'll go Scots first--"A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Louis Stevenson; I can sit and read to her. However, to get her started, picture books will work; I was thinking of "Good Night Moon"--that's a classic. I can probably dragoon her brother and sister (11 and 8, respectively)into service, but I have to keep them happy too.

I'll come up with something--I usually do!

Chapel Hill Public Library, at the University Mall. Me and the little one were over there this afternoon. I got a new library card and she got a number of books, including some Dr. Suess. I think we'll be fine.

Never be embarrassed by the truth, Jane Margeret, I was fortunate enough to
come across several *gifted* librarians, as a child and it's almost as if
they could look into my mind as they chose books for me to read. I don't
remember their names, but I do remember the very first book that was
suggested to me, it's storyline I still remember, but not it's title.

Crocus, sounds like a hoot and she definately is going to be someone
special. .....and when "aunt Jane Margaret" is on the scene, we will be be
discussing another immovable 'red-headed' object...hmmmm....is this a
*worlds collide* thingy ?

Well, she has a sunnier personality than I do. She has a strong sense of the ridiculous and is inquisitive. I am really enjoying her little self, as well asa the rest of the family. I guess it helps to be gone for a long while and then return to see how they all are.

There was a batch from northwest Sutherland in the 1700s, IIRC they all
followed their tacksman.

Until the early 1900s, I believe.

Many other groups as well.
Odd they all settled in the hot flat low country rather than the
