Last time I was in Scotland it was the same there too. Where the hell
do you live? Do you use candles?
The long life lights have mercury in them which is hard to dispose of.

No, CFLs. The shops almost give them away now compared with what they
used to cost.

We usually leave the hydrargyrum in the lamps so that the recycling
people at the council dispose of it. You still get mercury pollution
with incandescent lamps because of what goes up the chimney at the
power station; CFLs cut out about 75-80% of that.
