How typical.
You want to break out English Whisky but you cannot even spell the word.
In the first place the name is derived from the Gaelic word, "usquebaugh",
but outside of Scotland the spelling is, "Whiskey".
Only Scotch is spelled whisky.
Then there is the irony that you post your silly post into a
soc.culture.scottish newsgroup and you want to break out a drink that is
best identified as belonging to Scottish culrure.
Have the English no culture of their own?
Their language is from the Anglo Saxons who are incomers from the European
continent and they have nothing of their own as the culture is borrowed from
all the corners of the World. Still, let us look at the good side. While you
are drinking your English Whiskey just keep in mind that there is one more
bottle of Scotch left for the Scots or for export to boost the Scottish
economy.
Cheers!, (and enjoy your bottle of English).

It comes from the Gaelic word (gasp!) "Uisce Beatha". Translation: Water of

There are many more words in English that are derived from the Gaelic and
the Welsh.
Little credit the English dictionaries give to that fact.

What has ownership got to do with it - it is still Scotch Whisky. Is
it because it is an extremely good and marketable commodity that makes
it so attractive to foreign buyers?

Who owns the major players in gin distillation - even if they put
'London' on the label as well as gin?
Tanqueray, Gordon's, Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire and Gilbey's for
example?

Many folk - Google Jim Murray or Michael Jackson for starters. (If you
put in Michael Jackson be sure to add whisky as well to ensure you get
the right guy)

For a more international opinion you could try these:

http://www.forpeatsake.com/
http://www.maltadvocate.com/

So the Scots make many of the best whiskies.

Now, who says they don't?

British made - yes.

Scotch whisky can't be made anywhere other than Scotland. Why did you
